2023 colorado

We are looking for a Rv campground in the Colorado Springs area. I have been looking, but it seems a bit of a challenge.
Also a Rv cg between Telluride and Colorado Springs. I have found limited spots but most have limited positive reviews.
Any and all replies will be appreciated!!

When are you going and how long are you staying? Long term or couple of nights?

Just looking thru RV Life Campground reviews link in the red banner top of this page - if I was picking a spot In Colorado Springs I would look at the one by the Air Force Academy. We stayed at the KOA years ago and the KOA toward Pueblo two years ago. Both were fine for us. I get “spam” emails weekly from Garden of the Gods RV Park because I think Sun owns them and my email is in Sun’s database. It looks good to me.

Are you going to try to make it from Colorado Springs to Telluride in one day or are you looking for stops in between? I have not done that route - maybe someone else can advise you. Again - RV Life reviews is my go-to for this sort of information.

if you are with DOD, Military retiree, %100 disabled vet, or a VA medical card holder you can use the Famcamp on the Air Force Academy base. https://usafasupport.com/famcamp/ There are many Famcamps across the country on military bases. http://www.militarycampgrounds.us/milcamps Not very many veterans know about these places.

We stayed 2-3 weeks every summer from 2004 to 2014 at Fun Valley Family RV Resort just west of Southfork, CO on US 160. South Fork of the Rio Grande runs about half mile thru it. It is a family oriented park with lots of activities for kids and an enjoyable place for adults as well. Lots of us old f@arts stay there. We went with our kids, grandkids, and various friends. But it can be a very busy place that some people do not like. But end of August early September it slows down with most kids in school. Gated entrance, paved roads, but packed native soil sites that, with a few exceptions, do not really get muddy when it rains. Resort refers more to the numerous activities rather than an hint of luxury.

Decent park in Fountain, just outside Colorado Springs.

We stayed at Garden of the Gods RV resort and it was fine. Proximity to Garden of the Gods and other hiking was a plus. Downtown is not far. Air Force Academy is great to visit (check to see if they have finished Chapel renovation). Drive to top of Pike's Peak was fun.

Yes, we also stayed at the Garden of the Gods RV resort (which is not at the Garden of the Gods, but nearby). It was fine, nothing more. At the time there was so much construction, in the not so nice area...hopefully that construction is done now. RV Life Campground Reviews is the way to go for figuring this out.

Just a note

You may want to check out Old Colorado City while you're in the area. Nice area and some restaurants have a good view of the mountains. Great view at sunset as you enjoy supper.

Suggestions

Going from Colorado Springs via US-50, over Monarch Pass is a pretty good way. On the inside all the way up the pass going west, no guardrails on the east bound side. We avoid interstates, especially I25 and I70 due to construction.

We have stopped at the KOA west of Salida, just before the pass, only because we like the town. Not half way time-wise to Telluride though.

The Tomichi Creek Trading Post just over Monarch has some RV sites too.

Have also looked at the KOA in Gunnison (nicer park I think), but a little pricey.

If you can snag a site a Cheyenne Mountain State Park, book as early as you can. Turn right out of the park heading south on CO-115 takes you to US-50.

When we went to the Bluegrass Festival in Telluride, we camped in the Matterhorn Campground and used the free gondola from the resort to go into town. Not sure how many long sites are there and it closes early to mid September.

I would be happy to try and answer any questions you might have.

There are also a number of nice state parks. We are at Lake Pueblo SP right now. Electrionly but all of the loops have a dump station and water.

If you route thru South Fork, there are several places to stay. We stayed at Riverbend, I think it was called, this summer. Nice walk along the river and thru some large trees.
And if you go this route, I think you will head west on Highway 160, you go thru Fort Garland. Historic army fort site. Probably can see it all in an hour or less. My wife's great Uncle served there from around 1855 to 1860, so more important to us than most.

Check out peak rv new campground only can reserve 6 months in advance, Stopping there in June for 11 days, looked to be more spacious, than any koa or others in area,.Cheyenne Mountain state park is another great spot but had to get into. James M Cobb state park off I75 before you get to Denver if you are going that route.
