Orlando to Santa Monica Pier via Amarillo Route 66

End of September we are leaving Orlando FL heading to Amarillo TX to do the western half of Route 66. Planning on most direct way to Albuquerque for the Balloon Fiesta then on to Santa Monica Pier. Coming back we plan to retrace through Amarillo, tgaking in the Rt 66 sights and on into Oklahoma City, cutting across TN to cross over the Smoky Mountains the Franklin NC. Whew, got tired just typing it !! This is our first trip west of the Mississippi, so any guidance and advise would be welcomed.

Lou,

Enjoy your trip!

I have pulled our rig through LA traffic and it can be a little hair raising. There really is no slack time there for traffic. If you can stay east of LA and drive in it will be less stressful.

RV travel in the west is generally easier than the east. Larger and more RV parks, fewer low bridges, less traffic and better roads. On the downside from the towing perspective it is not flatland, towing up and down steep grades requires a different skillset. Take it slow and don't overheat your brakes.
