Need ideas for rear cargo rack
I need some ideas.
I purchased a Champion generator last year and mounted it to a rear cargo rack. The rack was too wide and hit the ladder preventing it from going into the hitch receiver. I purchased an extension, drilled it to shorten the extension, mounted the generator and thought everything was good. NOT
The rack extends 34” behind the Monty. Going up and down inclines it drags the ground. I could cut the extension and remove about 4” so the rack extends about 30”. However I don’t know if that would work.
I’ve tried to figure a away to raise the rack about 12” the give enough ground clearance. The generator is too big to fit the front bay where the Onan is designed to go. We have the short bed F350 with a slider hitch. So there’s no room to put it in the bed of the truck. Short of purchasing another rack that will clear the ladder and mount against the Monty or modifying the current rack, I’m out of ideas.

Cut one side of the rack off and reattach the side rail.

Well, if you need to raise the carrier 12 inches, why not use one of these. Rather than putting it in the drop down position, reverse it and put it in the raise-up position.

John,
One option would be to sell the champion and buy two smaller gennies that are easier to manage.

Any shop that installs hitches can custom fab what you want. It would be no problem to have the platform up and out of the way and stable as well.

I got this one with the angled shank for more ground clearance.
CURT 60" x 24" Black Steel Basket Cargo Carrier (Folding 2" Shank, 500 lbs.)
https://www.homedepot.com/p/CURT-60-...8153/205631490
SKU# 205631490
As others have mentioned above, since you already have invested in the carrier, I would get the adjustable hitch receiver and use a higher slot for your shank.

I have the same basic setup as you and what I did is put the generator in front of the slider hitch. I then took the exhaust pipe off and welded a quick disconnect onto the exhaust so that I can add a flexible pipe extension on and have the exhaust exit out over the bed side. Works great and when I don’t need the extension I take it off. Good thing is when it’s in the bed it’s nearly impossible to steal with a chain through the tie downs. No pictures… sorry

I would be more concerned about the bounce at the rear of the trailer.
I would find a way to carry it in the truck bed.

As an update, here’s my cheap solution. I cut the top rail of the cargo holder (the bottom will slide under the ladder) and removed the extension. I was able to reduce the distance from 34 to 24”.
I appreciate the input. I should have said we have a second fuel tank in the bed of the truck, which is why that idea wouldn’t work. Also I’d rather cut the cargo rack than the ladder. I liked the idea of the offset receiver, but it cost almost as much as the carrier.
Thanks everyone. We’re in FL and drive back to TX Sunday. We’ll see how well this works. 👍
