DEF Brands

Just wondering if you guys have a preference when buying DEF other than at the pumps when filling up at truck stops? I have a 2020 Ram 2500 and I have been using the Autozone brand. They sell the Blue DEF but I was just curious if there is any difference between the two other than price. When I look at the ingredients, they both seem to be the same and meet all Federal requirements. This is my first experience with using DEF. I had a 2011 Ram 2500 that did not require it.

There are standards for DEF regardless of the manufacturer. I have used what ever brand of DEF was available and cheapest when I need it for over 10 years. The key thing is to be sure it is somewhat fresh.

All brands are supposed to meet the same federal standards so I don’t think there is any reason to pay the higher price for Blue DEF. I suspect the truck stop stuff is generic rather than brand specific.

I get the Walmart brand every time if I can. We were out in the middle of nowhere a few months ago and the only thing I could find was some super duty platinum gold Blue DEF box for like $18. No idea if it was as great as the box claimed or not but I had no choice.

Kind of like Aspirin. You can pay $10.00 for a bottle of Bayer or you can pay $1.50 for the generic no-name brand stuck in the far corner of the store. If you look at the actual ingredients, they are identical. You can pay for a name brand if you want, but that is all you are paying for, a name on a box.

Check the ingredients. They are all the same. Get the cheapest.

And the newest ,as said they do have a shelf life. The big reason I use Peak Blue DEF, it has a manufacturing date on it, just need to know how to read it. The cheapest is usually the Walmart brand ,but I don't believe it has such a date, but they go thru it pretty fast so its most likely pretty new .

As much as I use not concerned with the cost.

Good idea. If we keep this a secret we will have all of it. But you can’t tell anybody.
Oh what did they say about two people keeping a secret.

You just need to read the date codes on each brand to check for the date of pocduct manufactured.

I bought 4 boxes yesterday from auto zone @ $17.00 a box so I`m trying to help that along. Walmart was out and the girl said they don`t know when they will be able to get more said there`s a run on it now. They move so much product I can`t imagine it could be stale at anytime. Think about it, truck stops are never going to run out if they did it would bring this country to a halt, so you could always go there to buy.

I wasn't going to say anything but since it's out. I've been having trouble finding DEF in western NC for at least the last month. Walmart has been out for some time now.

Local O'Reilly had it so I bought a "box". Later found one at Walmart and bought it. Since the new variant I decided I should get another jug just in case.

None in any Walmart in the area so I went back to O'Reilly's. They still have it but not that much. I'm keeping it in the basement bay as it's supposed to have a two year shelf life if stored correctly.

Some information from a reliable source:

Quote:
Q. What is the shelf life of DEF?
A. The shelf life of DEF is a function of ambient storage temperature. DEF will degrade over time depending on temperature and exposure to sun light. Expectations for shelf life as defined by ISO Spec 22241-3 are the minimum expectations for shelf life when stored at constant temperatures. If stored between 10 and 90 deg F, shelf life will easily be one year. If the maximum temperature does not exceed approximately 75 deg F for an extended period of time, the shelf life will be two years.

I've got three total and 3/4 of a tank in the truck.

It's starting to get bad down under.

Yup, it appears the hoarding had began, good for you . Hopefully they won't buy into here ,plenty on the shelves at Walmart ,as well as Home Depot.

Just bought a jug at Walmart a half hour ago, they must have had at least 30-40 jugs on the shelves both places , was just curious so I checked . I saw the need for just one , nearly empty, and hopefully most will be the same , or maybe two ,to fill up .

I need to purchase a 2-1/2 gallon container this weekend. I add when I get to a half tank or just below half. My truck really don’t use that much unless I’m pulling the 5th.

Just yesterday I noticed this guy buying 4ea 2.5 gals of DEF. People will begin to hoard if they think there will be a shortage, many time shortages are created by greedy people.

Happy Trails.

I agree I buy when the level reaches 1/2 or below. Buy 2.5 gals at a time. My GMC uses very little unless towing the John Deere tractor or the 5th wheel.

Happy trails.
