Wow, I didn't know the old 3400 was worth that!!
Got a little bit bored this morning, so I just happened to be browsing the web and ended up on the dealer's site where we traded in the 2007 3400RL for the new 3750FL. The "sale price" of our old rig was posted and I was a little bit on the surprised side to see what they were asking. It was a little weird looking at our vacation home for the previous three years, and I am sure it will serve someone well, hopefully after some negotiating??? I don't regret the trade at all since we absolutely love the new rig. And finally, to end the suspense and answer the question that I am sure is in everyone's mind. $42,900. What strikes me the most is I only paid about four thousand more than that new. I guess Montana's hold their value really well!! I will admit that the rig still looks good!!

I have been looking at listing lately and it seems that all units are priced artifically high. I guess that gives them room to let a perspective buyer know about this "big" discount the salesman was able to talk the manager into. ......

Agree...without some room to go down, many perspective buyers will just walk.

Huge markups are to cover the dealer on trade ins. Also banks will only lend money for book value. Keeping the list price high is a way to be able to appear to give more for a trade. In most cases if folks really knew what they were getting on trades they would walk out on the spot. The only way to really know is to start the negotiation as a straight buy. Get it down to the lowest dollar and then introduce your trade. After the dealer throws up you can get some real numbers out of them. In 99% of deals the amount offered for the trade will shock you in a very bad way. I admit I am a cheapskate, so I never trade. I buy and sell separately. There are a lot of folks that trade for pure convenience. Just beware of the huge markup when trading.

The underlying purpose of the post was to hopefully make those in the market for a used rig, realize that the markups on the used rigs can be very substantial. We made out very well on our trade since we had competing dealerships vying for our business. Nonetheless, I was a little surprised that the supposed "sale price" of a four year old rig was within ten percent of what we had paid for it new. It is always buyer beware, do your homework, and be a hard-nosed negotiator. Oh, and never be afraid to ask for all kinds of extras to be thrown in!!

I suppose they go by NADA or similar. NADA shows my '07 3075RL within about $3K of what I paid for it.

When I bought my used 2955rl in 2006, I offered $8000 less than what was asked. They agreed to accept $7000 less and we towed it off the lot.

I didn't mean to imply you got a bad deal. I have a lot of friends who get all excited about the offer for their trade until I point out they are paying MSRP for the new car/camper/ or whatever. A lot of people really don't know. And amazingly there are many more that want the new one so bad they just don't care. Like I said, I'm a self proclaimed cheapskate.

Exactly, a very good point that hopefully will register on new members who may be looking at a purchase or trade in the near future!! MSRP's are a very bogus number that a reasonable negotiator should be able to get at least 25 - 30% off of. With that logic applied, the dealer "should" be willing to sell our old rig for a substantial supposed discount as was mentioned. Would be interesting to be privy to the sales information???? I fully understood what you were saying.

Bingo, we were up to your dealership last Saturday browsing around a bit. Before we left they had stated they would get us a trade in price on the 3750FL and an SOB Crusader by Forest River. It seems that the Crusader has tried to imitate the Montana except for the price; it was listed for $20,000.00 less and we couldn’t find any significant difference. Anyway they had promised to call us back on Monday and I haven’t heard from them yet. I’m not concerned because we’re not intending on buying anyway. Just surprised they didn’t get back in touch with us.

I hope the dealerships make profits, stay healthy and remain open. They won't be able to offer service to us when people want to buy at cost nad they fold.

When we bought our Mountaineer the dealer here wanted $51,900 no trade and with our 2003 trade they wanted 41,900 and I bought the very same Mountaineer in Iowa for $31,250 no trade and sold the old 5th wheel outright for $11,000 leaving my total price to pay for the Mountaineer @ $20,250. A far cry from the $41,900 the local dealer here wanted. So it does pay to shop around. The local dealer here was going to not only get our trade in for free but was also going to charge us $10,650 more and wasn't even planning on giving me a kiss when he was done with me Love our coach now!! Plus can afford to use it!
