Bad Fuel

Just for everyone’s heads up, we are heading towards warmer weather and stopped to get fuel at Costco. OMG, only put in about 1/4 tank and about 10 mile down the road it started acting up, was able to nurse it to an open lot here in Blackfoot. Long story short the fuel was thinned out enough to not get enough lube to the cp pump and injectors. Luck enough it didn’t do anymore damage. Replaced the pump and injectors cleaned the system and tank. No garages within 50 miles could work on it for 2-3 weeks. The person we got to do the work has went out of their way to help. Hauled us water, took me to get LP, and then his sister-in-law whom works at cal ranch paid for our gas. Happy Thanksgiving she said. And this afternoon my mechanic and wife showed up with 2 plates of food and 2 plates of desserts. Happy Thanksgiving. It is so good to see good people are out there. Oh we’ve been here a week already and probably another 5 days because of the Holiday. We’re warm. Lol.

You have a good attitude. It wouldn’t do any good to jump up and down, cuss and beat your head. The damage is done enjoy your stay with some very nice people.

I supposed this is a Diesel engine so replacing the high pressure pump and all the injectors and fuel lines will be expensive. Probably 8 grand. Get a sample of the fuel from your truck and the station. You can probably force them to pay for the repair. Turn it into your insurance company they may pay to have it fixed. I have heard of insurance companies paying for this repair than going after the station.
And good luck.

That is a great part of the country with good people; glad you found someone that can fix the truck.

I haven't seen a Costco yet that had diesel. Are you sure you didn't pump gasoline?

I go to the Costco in Portland Oregon never had a problem with their Diesel!
Costco is a great company to work with. If it was bad fuel ( I’m not saying it wasn’t) I’m sure someone has called them already!
Please keep us posted on the outcome!☮️✌🏻

Costco Fresno-at River Park does have Diesel. You should let the Costco know what happened

Did you get costco to pay for the repair?

We had a major service center accidentally get gas in the diesel tank, 1 trucking company filled 5 semi's in a row. They burnt 4 of the 5 engines (scored pistons). Long story short the service center's insurance picked up the tab on the engines.

Bad Fuel

I always keep recite from station to prove we’re I bought fuel. In case of bad fuel problems. Seems even the high volume movers even have problems

2011 through 2016 Diesel engines with certain injection pumps were suffering failure due to low fuel lubricity. My 2012 Duramax had the pump fail at 82,000 miles. Pushed metal throughout the fuel system, injectors and return to the fuel tank. I believe the pump has been redesigned or replaced with a different manufacturer after 2016. Fords, Dodges and GM all had similar issues. Adding a fuel lubrication additive helps. Howes, Lucas, etc. all help. I purchased extended warranty coverage at the purchase of the truck (new) to mostly cover the electronics on the truck. Who knew the fuel system would fail and be a covered repair. PHEW! Just shiegh of $12,000. repair.

I guess I'm the lucky one, I've had a diesel for over 20 years, never a problem, I always use truck stops for "fresh fuel"

He probably paid with a CC. so he has a recent
Even if he put gasoline in his truck, which seams increasingly likely his insurance company will probably pay.
If his truck is still under warranty his warranty will not cover. This is considered abuse by the manufacturers.

Sorry to hear your about your trouble. I had an Injector pump fail too at 15K on my 2015 GMC DuraMax in the middle of nowhere. Had 2 AAA HD tow trucks show up after 8 hour wait on Memorial weekend during a storm and towed me home 100 miles. GM paid the $10K repair. My breakdown was not bad fuel though. I just started fueling this year at Truck stops using the EFS system fuel cards saving on average 20 to 40 cents a gallon and ensuring fresh fuel too. One time I saved 65 cents a gallon at a private truck stop that used the EFS card system. Great you had kind souls help you out with everything.
