Brake disconnect up-date

A few months back I posted my OEM Ram brake control would show "trailer disconnected", this was a intermittent problem. Hard to fix something that is not broke. So after searching several forums and Ram experts, I decided it could be anything.

So, I disconnected the aftermarket thingy that the in-bed 7 pin is wired with. Found nothing. All the pins were clean and had a coating of grease on them. Next I looked at the end of the 7 pin on the trailer. Looked OK, except the brass was a bit tarnished looking. Took a small plastic container and put about 1/2" of straight CLR in it and let the trailer connector sit in it for about 6 hours. Most of the contacts cleaned up pretty good. So thinking if a little bit is good, then another 6 hours will be better. Next day, another 6 hour soak. Between soaks, I used a small paper nail file, cut into a small strip and sanded the contacts in the trailer cord.

Rinsed good with water. Packed the plug contacts with electric grease. Hooked up a month later, drove 4 days and not a bit of a disconnect issue.

So, maybe once a year/season, give the trailer cord a good cleaning.

Jim

I bought some of that super diaelectric spray at the Escapee rally. It works well on those connections
