Disk Brake Brand

Looks like disk brakes are our next upgrade. I've read the archives and have a good idea of how to do a clean installation. My question is, what is the go to brand?

We went with Kodiak Brakes with a brakerite controller. They have served us well while traveling from MD to Yellowstone and to Maine.

I went with Performance Trailer braking at the Escapees rally in Tucson in 2018. They use Dexter brand. The brakes have been fine and I've changed the pads in Jan. 2021. We traveled full time and most of it out West in the mountains. The only problem we have is the controller. We have a 2017 F350 and their controller sends a signal to the hydraulic pump every 10 seconds. They have looked at ours and many other newer Fords and they have not been able to solve the problem. Dexter has assured us that this will not impact the life of the system. They tried several fixes but I think it will need a redesign / upgrade. The brakes are wonderful in traffic and in the mountains. I would recommend the brake upgrade and depending on your truck maybe the Kodiak instead of Performance.

Performance used the Kodiak calipers on our install with the Brakerite actuator and the system has been great. They used the 8,000 rotors so have the 9/16" studs and the larger outer bearings.

Do the larger studs fit the factory wheels?

Wire a brake magnet into the system and you won't have the clicking every 10 seconds

The wheels will fit up to 5/8" studs, so there wasn't any problem with the wheels. They supplied new lug nuts with the entire kit that the installer used.

On the Kodiac brake system with the actuator, is it a complete system? No need for special tools to bend hard brake lines or anything else? I'm leaning more towards getting the disc brakes since we plan on keeping our trailer for a long time.

When we had our disc brakes installed a few years ago, the installer used his various brake line bender tools when routing the steel brake lines. I would not suggest trying to bend the lines by hand as you might kink the line.

If you're considering an IS upgrade in the future you might want to check with Morryde to make sure your new brakes could be reused. Our unit had Kodiak so we're good to go when our November IS install appointment comes up (booked last July).

Drums to discs? Electric to hydraulic? Had our 10,100 lb 3255RLL ('03) only 2+ months. New wheel bearings & tires just before purchase. Electric brakes work well, but I'd like to upgrade as we're going to our '02 Dodge 3500. EBC rotors & pads for '03/newer. Recommendations?

I've got the EBC rotors and pads on our 3500. Total improvement while solo and noticible improvement while towing. They are a bit dusty for my preference but otherwise, good stuff.

Care to comment on the oil bath system. Getting tired of the greasing routine and was looking into this. Not many people have changed to this. As you, with disk brakes I don`t have the need to take things apart for pad/rotor inspection. Just seems to easy with just an oil change from time to time.

We also have your brake systems and 2013 GMC 3500HD. Curious if you have had any problems since the install with your truck brake modules or compatibility with the truck trailer brake systems?

bshgto, I'll pass the info I received from MORryde when I inquired about Oil Bath.
Works great in Over the Road Trucks because they never set for long. While our Units may sit for months without moving, allowing to oil to flow off the top half of the bearing leaving them dry for possible rust, plus some are prone to leak.
So I just make an appointment with MORryde every few years for total suspension, brake, and bearing checks. This past year we had all Brake pads replaced (50K miles), one sheer spring, and bearing repacked while everything was apart.
