Battery Switches

Hi newbie here we just took delivery of our 3781, and I know they probably explained it at some point. What is the difference between the battery switch in the front compartment and the one on the side with the water and other controls are.

Thanks
Dean & Pat

I am assuming you have a 2022? In the past, the battery disconnect in the convenience center (the area with water controls, valves and connections) is not a true disconnect and has lead to more issues than I can count. When off (you can pull the key out) it stops many functions but not all. So, many people thought they isolated their battery by turning it off. However, hydraulics and several parasitic loads continued with the key off. It also turns off charging. I have not seen the 2022 battery switch in the front compartment. Is it a big heavy duty switch or just a simple toggle?

It’s a 2021 with a legacy package I don’t know if that changes anything or not the switch in the battery compartment is like a marine switch that you turn like a clock

Thanks Dean

I'm assuming you have a Residential Fridge and an Inverter. The switch in the Battery Compartment is the cutoff switch for the Inverter which in turn will prevent your Frig from operating on the Batteries.

Michelle/Ann, does that kill the power to just the inverter or the whole coach? We have a main power switch on the Super Solar box that kills all power. In the past, many got confused with the disconnect thinking they didn’t have any battery drain with the switch off and came back to find dead batteries. Not sure why that is even there. Just curious, since all Keystone products now come with some level of solar starting in 2022.

Can't tell you for sure, because our SOB just uses a 200 or 250 amp fuse vs a disconnect switch, but I do know that it's a direct line from Battery Bank to Fuse and on to our Inverter mounted on the Basement wall opposite the Fuse.

Ron, I can't speak to the newer rigs, but on my 2019, the cutoff in the battery compartment ONLY cuts DC power to the inverter for the residential refrigerator. I have solar pre-wire only from Jaboni IIRC. I never turn off the switch in the wet bay, but it only isolates the battery from "most" of the DC systems. Things like the hydraulic pump for the Level Up and slides, CO detector and a few parasitic drains are run directly to the battery and not through the switch in the wet bay. I added a knife style cutoff switch on the negative terminal of my battery box to get a full cutoff.

I had the same problem with my battery draining with the convenience center battery switch off. I have electric jacks on my 2019 HC, but the drain was from the carbon monoxide detector on the kitchen island. Why they hotwired this I don't know-- it's guaranteed to drain your battery dead while in storage.

I added a marine rotary battery switch I got on Amazon for about $17. I ran a long red lead from the battery to the new switch, (through the gas bottle space (take care to prevent chafing), drilled a hole to the front left cargo compartment front left corner, then another red wire back to the multi-lug post on the bulkhead above the battery), so when I open the cargo door to get my step stool to connect the trailer, the new battery switch is right there. I never bother with the factory switch in the convenience center any more.

You can get long red wires at Walmart or any auto parts store. Super easy to install.
