Side Impact at Wheels and Slide

Help - What do I look for in terms of damage to the wheels, axles, slide, frame, etc.? Thursday last week we were leaving Branson traveling about 5 mph in traffic and a woman pulls out of a parking lot and drives directly into the side of our camper. The person was traveling maybe 10 mph, but the impact bent the hydraulic dining slide, crushed the wheel hubcaps, and cut both of my brand new Goodyear tires.

First thing I'd look for is the phone number of the claims office for my insurance...then get underneath to confirm no frame damage. Then plan on 2 to 3 months of no use while trying to get repairs finished.

We've been in contact with the woman's insurance, she has $25K coverage and we have full coverage on our end if need be. We had to leave the camper in Branson because we had commitments at home in Spfld the next day so I'm at a loss for immediately reviewing anything. Their insurance adjuster reviewing today. Does anyone know the average rate of transport services for the midwest?

Rick,

It does not look very bad. A friend had a similar incident with the slide - the shop was able to pull it out fairly easily. Based on just the dented caps and cut in tires, axles damage is not likely but an alignment shop can check that out. An initial test would be having someone watch how the wheels track as you pull it slowly. The Jwrap can either be repaired or replaced - they are fairly simple to change.

Thanks Zack, it sounds encouraging, I just didn't know how fragile these trailers were when hit in the side. The lady couldn't have been going over 10 mph, but we did feel the jostling in the truck. I was concerned about the slide track bars, I didn't run it out because I was afraid it may get stuck while going out or coming back in.

I would still notify my insurance in case they're needed to work with lady's insurer later. I would do it by email so I had a record of it.

I hit a post in a filling station once only going about 3 miles an hour. Was able to back-up and was relieved to see only the J-wrap bent. Pulled it out, got my fuel, and hit the road. Pulled in a rest area about 50 miles from the filling station and one of the tires was already showing unusual wear. When I hit the post in the filling station it bent the j-wrap directly into the slide bracket on the end of the hydraulic ram for my slide. Bent axel. So before you settle get the alignment checked as AZ Traveler suggest.

If the impact was hard enough to cut your tires, it definitely was hard enough to bend your axles. I would be checking both sides because your hubcaps are crushed. The impact most likely pushed your rig sideways, and these things can only take so much of the lateral movement. Be very cautious of your axle alignment.

Thanks all for your help. Of course the shelter insurance adjuster didn't contact me back like he was supposed to today so I'll have to chase him down tomorrow. I see another trip to Branson is in my immediate future where I'll purchase and have some cheap tires mounted so that I can get my rig to Nixa, MO to have RVIncidents.com review and fix everything including new goodyear tires.

I know you've already said this to yourself, but how the heck did she miss seeing a travel trailer. Talk about having ones head where the sun don't shine. Good grief !!!!

I want to know how she can only have $25k in coverage. That whole statement is outrageous. And it's not just her. This is a complete scam that allows insurers an out to fixing the damage their clients caused. Bad drivers aren't held liable, and apparently neither is the insurance company! This accident shouldn't have cost you a penny. I know we won't solve this issue in this forum, but it's still maddening and I'm sorry you've become their latest victim. Sure hope all turns out well for you. Sorry about my rant, that crap just riles me up!

Before taking it anywhere check the spring hangers and make sure they are not bent. That kind of impact could very well have bent, or broken one or more of them. Also look for frame damage. Need to have someone familiar with RVs and trailers do the insurance walk around - a lot different than automobile damage assessments.

Agreed, but I think it is the state she is in that sets the minimums. I didn’t know there were any under 100K.

I believe $25K is a fairly typical minimum coverage for property damage. Injury or death coverage is typically higher. I believe a high percentage of drivers carry coverage in excess of minimums.

It really doesn’t take much of an impact to bend brackets, supports, bolts, and other metal components. I would make sure a competent service tech checked all support brackets, springs and components, wheels, hubs, spindles, and axles for any deflection. An adjuster may not be skilled enough to identify any and all potential problems.

As another has suggested, you definitely need to notify your insurance company. They can cover anything the other driver’s insurance won’t. Plus your insurance company will go after her to cover those damages not covered by her insurance. You don’t have to do that, your insurance company should . Also, keep track of you mileage that you travel when trying to take care of your trailer claim, and any other expenses directly related to the repair of your trailer. You can submit it to her insurance for reimbursement. Make sure repairs are done by qualified people. You do not have to have any repairs done by anyone but who you choose. Stay on top of it and document everything in writing, including telephone conversations. Follow up the conversation with an email confirming what was discussed. Good luck and hope you can get some quick repairs.

Each state sets it's own minimum comverage. In Texas where I live now is $30,000, whilst in CA (where i used to live) the minimum is $15,000.

Obviously, most people have 'more than' the minimum.. And i'm thinking especially owners of 3/4 ton trucks or larger.
