Traveling in windy conditions

Q: This is my first year with a 41’ 5th wheel and towed with a 2021 Ram 6.7 Diesel 2500. We are leaving Michigan on Friday the December 17th traveling I-69 through Indiana to Alabama then to Florida by January 1st.
Weather could be some rain, but wind gusts of 31 MPH most of the way to Alabama. Is their any thoughts/suggestions regarding wind speed and traveling. I’m trying to get ahead of any snow but still take my time.
Thanks in advance

I've pulled our unit in some pretty strong winds, BUT I pull with a One Ton Dually which doesn't get pushed around.
Your truck might be your biggest problem, controlling that Rolling Brick behind you.
Others will be along with other opinions.

I’ve never pulled a camper as long and heavy as yours. My camper is 36 feet and 9400 pounds but I have pulled it in 50+ gusts at 70 MPH. Yes you do feel it when the air was calm and a hard gust hits you from the side. I’ve never been blown out of my lane or felt in danger. My truck is a 2008 F250. I don’t think you will have any trouble. Be careful, stay alert and enjoy the trip.

Towed my 34’+ Monte with my F350 SRW in cross winds of 30+ mph gusting even higher multiple times. Was very surprised at how little the truck and trailer moved around. Didn’t weave nearly as much as motor homes in front of us. Didn’t really appreciate how hard the wind was blowing until we stopped for rest stops and got out to walk the dog.

Greg,

I have pulled in some 40-50 knot winds. Not bad if they stay fairly steady. Pull over and take a break if you get uncomfortable.

Pay attention and go with your feel. Slow down if getting pushed around. If a headwind, if you are going 60 add the headwind speed and be aware of what the trailer is experiencing. 80 or 90 mph windspeed can rip components off. Otherwise, such tailwinds are wonderful.

We have been unexpectedly caught in 40+ mph wind gusts, but we will never knowing pull into them. We wait a day or two for the wind to die down and then go. Missing the first day or two of a reservation isn't that important to us. Remember it's not just how well you handle the wind, but you are trusting others to handle it well also.

I also have a SRW and tow a 38 ft that weighs about 13,500 when I load it up. I stayed over an extra once in CO when they predicted 50mph winds. I have towed in gust that were 40mph, I think. After getting a new computer board due to regen messing, I got 8-9 mpg for a few hours then hit a head wind that was 30-40 and mpg dropped to 5-6mpg!!! Thought the board was messed up, but next day without wind it was back to 10.5-11.5. You should have no trouble as long as wind is less than 40 or 45.

I watch for Semi trucks. If the wind is high enough truckers will often pull over, stop at rest stops, or just shut down for a while in rest stops. If the trucks are rolling, I figure I can too.

I've stopped before, but there was an incredible amount of rain and bursts of wind that pushed me around like a wad of paper rolling on the ground. The rain was coming down so hard, almost everything on the road came to a stand still.

You just have to use your best judgment. Your trailer can easily take a 100 mile head-on wind blowing directly at the front of the camper (or the back). After all, they are designed to go down the road at 60, 70, 80 mph. Or more... That's an 80 mph head wind hitting the trailer.

The problem is side winds. Watch this video and the next time you are caught in a strong cross wind, .... well .... let's hope you never are....

Back in 1986 I was driving my huge Vega westbound in I80 in Nebraska in March. Watched a FedEx or UPS truck ahead of me and it was leaning about 30 degrees to the side. It got off at the next exit!! No wonder!
And last year we were staying at a park in Dodge City. We went for a walk around the park and in about 10 minutes the wind started blowing. We got back to the rig in about 2 minutes and it was REALLY blowing. Thought about bringing in the slides, but didn't. We rock and rolled a bit and then it subsided. Later heard that on I70 about 30-40 miles away there were something like 17 semis tipped over!!!!!

In our area of Colorado 30 mph is a normal day. Start driving, if you feel uncomfortable, slow down. We have forecast winds up to 120 mph coming tomorrow. I wouldn’t drive in that. But 40 - 50 mph isn’t that terrible, even as a side wind. As I said, just slow down if you’re uncomfortable. Safe travels.

The fact is no matter what Truck you have if the wind hits it just right it will roll over. We begin our travels in 2005, I pull thru or stayed in 44 States. The only time I decided to pul over, we were on our trip to South Texas, (RGV), Mission Texas. Towing a 40' Mobile Suites those of you who have owned the Mobile Suites knows they are heavy. Towing with a Chevy 4500HD wind got bad, so I started looking for a Truck stop, pulled off, parked between two 18 wheelers, no issues. I think a person has to think safety first and always.

Happy trials.
