Hauling Water managment

Newbie question - We're headed out on our first long haul & wondered how to manage the amount of water you haul. It appears I've done a poor job of it when going away for the weekends in that I always come home with way too much water...and we didn't skimp either.
I want to haul the least amount for the longest length, but how do you find places to fill up prior to reaching your destination (assuming no camp ground)? And how far out do you start looking?
Is there an app that can tell you that or are there no-brainer places that everyone goes to?
And do you usually have to pay for the water?

Not sure what part of the country you are in, I'm guessing western US. We usually stay in state park campgrounds, so the only time we run into not having water at our site is in the winter when the supply is turned off due to freezing weather. We can usually fill our tank, or my bladder tank, at the comfort station/bath house in the park. They seem to keep that water going even in the winter since that building is heated.

We usually travel with half to two-third fresh water. Then every 2 -3 days schedule a site where we can dump and fill.

Well, it's easier to take too much water with you when you start your trip and if you don't use it all just dump it what's left, than it is to not have enough water when you start out and then have to find somewhere to fill the tank.

Only you know how much water you and your party use and need.

I figure, you can never have too much water with you.

The only water we travel with is in the Black Tank, I have found it is not necessary to haul water around. We only drink bottle water. And if for some reason, you need to stop and not put out the slides, Truck Stops have shower facility's. It is ones, need or want which has to be filled.

Happy trails.

I bought a 25 gallon water bladder to carry water from a fill station to the rig if I don't want to move it. I also have a sewer Tote for going the other way.
Normally I get two freshwater tank fills to one dump day run.
As for filling, local gas stations, truck stops, rest stops, dump stations (make damn sure it's "potable" water) it all depends on where you are. Make sure you have a LONG hose.

I don't like travelling with too much water, afraid of the long term impacts on the fresh water tank bracing. So, we have a bladder we carry to fill up when in spots with no water supply. I'd guess we normally travel with our fresh water tank less than 25% full.

Thanks everyone for your input. Think I'll try 25% for a couple of known overnight boondocking legs

We travel with enough fresh water to flush the toilet along the way. That's all. We generally stay in locations with full hookups so not having water when we get there has not been a problem so far. Just in case, we do have a bladder stored in the basement.

First, a lot of good information, but you didn’t say if you are boondocking or going to campgrounds. A little in the tank is all that is required if you are just going to a campground. We routinely boondock a week at a time. Some of the roads we travel are very rough, but we travel with full water tanks. This is our fourth Montana and how we’ve always done it. We fill till it comes out the overflow. We also carry a pump and a 45 gallon water bladder. At 10 days we’re usually ready for water and to dump. Enjoy.

The same here. Almost always 100% full. Never had a problem.

I’d say it depends on your usage. Get a water meter and visit a full hook up site. Be diligent and make a log. Log a normal house shower for each family member, log an RV shower for each family member, track doing dishes, track a full day to do the math and subtract out and find toilet usage, etc.

Once you have created a log of your usage, you will know what you need and what you can support. Use the water meter to fill the holding tank to the number of gallons your log says you need. You can add up your trip and not worry if you have enough, or are hauling to much.

I’d suggest having one or two extra gallons just in case you have mid trip bathroom breaks, etc.

I have an older camper and I have 7 gallon water jug to add water if dry camping. So I don’t have to hold 7 gallons in the air, I also have a portable 12volt spare water pump rigged up to move water from the jug into the holding tank for use, or to install in the camper if the camper one goes out.

I fill it up, and I keep a full tank even when we’re sitting for awhile. I do flush and sanitize the tank every few months and refill.

I never worry about too much fresh water, though hauling it around adds un-necessary weight but I never travel with full waste tanks. Too hard on them. 5 gallons in the black tank to slosh around and that's it.

This is the absolute BEST suggestion you can get.

We got one off Amazon and I track how much water we use all the time.
