Oder

Last weekend was the 3rd time out. I noticed an oder that was only present at the bottom of the stairs near the door after flushing. I immediately freaked out and started looking for leaks. I couldn't find any. I added a fresh packet of lilac conditioner and flushed and confirmed the sent and location. I suspect a vent problem? But if it was a vent problem wouldn't you smell it all the time?

My thoughts won't be much help, but they may trigger additional thoughts from you. When you flush, you are pressurizing the black tank since the toilet inlet pipe is much bigger than the vent pipe. When not flushing the tank is at a static pressure and any vapors can take their sweet time to exit to the roof. If the assumption is made that there is no crack on top of the tank OR the vent pipe entrance into the tank is solid and can only vent through the pipe...could you be getting sewer exhaust being layered close to the ground and being pulled into the basement where you smell it? Maybe the also slim chance that vapors are being forced out of the black tank throught the black tank rinse line and entering the basement area. Good luck and hope whatever you find is easy to solve. Jphn

You can pick up odors outside and inside if you leave any of the drain valves open. You will get the smell when the pressure in the sewer system pushes odors into the rig and they can come out the vents on the roof and also occasionally will get inside. I forgot to close the gray tank drain valve a couple days before and that evening, sitting outside I noticed that familiar scent and realized what I had done. Several weeks ago, we were getting the odor inside, and I had not cleaned the Hepvo valve in the shower drain in a while, so I got my small bottle brush out and cleaned the membrane of the valve and solved that odor problem.
