New member looking for used Montana

Hi there,
New member here doing research on Montana/HC. First thing I notice is how helpful this site/members appear!

We are relatively new at RVing. Bought a bumper pull w/o slide in 2021 to try it out, sold it and bought a bigger bumper w/2 slides 2022 (bought used). Now considering an upgrade to bigger 5th wheel. Current camper is 2015 FR HG 312QBUD. It is great for summer camping in WI state parks since we are only in the camper to sleep! We found it a little small after 2 weeks in Gulf State Park in AL in December working from the camper (we both work remotely).

We just upgraded to a 2024 GMC Sierra 3500HD SRW 6.6L Duramax. Looking for a 5th wheel that we can work from as snowbirds and/or comfortable spend a few months at a time out west after we retire.

We are gravitating towards 372/373RD or 3791RD.

I'm ok with simple DIY but not likely to take on big repairs. So, I'm concerned with post covid units.

If we found a 2019 is the experience of the community been better than later years?

TIA for the welcome to this community. Hoping we can find a Montana to be legit!

comments welcome

Welcome
We have a 3130re.
3790 is our favorite floor plan. If we were doing it again that's what we would get.
Don't forget to check FB for Keystone Montana Owners. The 3790 has a FB page also.

Darin,

Welcome to the forum!

Find the rig you like. Covid certainly created some supply chain and quality issues. If you take your time and do a good inspection I would not be afraid of a unit built during Covid.

I hear you, on the quality issue. The more I read about new Montanas, the more I like my old one. Be aware, though, if you plan to spend several years full-timing in a used RV, that many RV parks have restrictions on how old your RV can be if you want to spend a month or more in that park. Lots of places say your rig can't be more than 10 years old. If you buy a 2019, you're already five years in on that age limit.

You need a 5er that is built for a full-timer. Like here

Check out a 3761fl. We have a 2021 model and love it. Plenty of room, bath n 1/2, lots of storage if needed. Has to sleeper sofa’s in the living room. If not need could remove one and make a nice desk work area.

As far as finding one for sale. In addition to used ones sometimes appearing on here for sale, there is also a Montana Owners Facebook group where they sometimes pop up for sale.
Check the prices to nada.com. The asking prices are often much higher than nada rates them. People don’t realize just how bad early year depreciation is.

You're post says Montana/HC. Is that an either or? Either way, things to consider.

  • Boon docking? Don't get a residential fridge.
  • State parks. Be careful of length. Many parks can't handle long trailers.
  • Buying used? If you want solar and all the newer tech, you'll want to look at 2022 and up models.
  • Maintenance logs and receipts. Ask to see them.
  • Try to buy private
  • Mileage. Sounds odd but get something that has been some use. Example: my 22 has been out 35 times. Bugs have been rung out under warranty.
You'll never find a perfect RV of any brand but if slightly used and maintained you can find a good unit. Make sure the roof has been maintained. As far as models, if it were me I'd try to find a front living. We love our floor plan but if I were to spend months in it I'd prefer the larger living room. The problem with FL is it puts you at 40+ feet.

The three hurdles:
1) are you near southern WI?
2) does it have the rear pull out storage that the 372 does?
3) does it have a King Bed in master?

If all are yes, while it's not our preferred floor plan, we might be interested.

3791rd

Too far from you, but we are selling our ‘16 3791 moving to a Sundowner Toyhauler. We just need to combine a couple trailers.

The 3791 is a great machine, and actually is a small house. If you have the truck to pull it, I would highly recommend you look at one.

Lots of space. You won’t feel like you are in a box. 5 slide outs, full size refrig, large kitchen/dining area, separate LR, washer and dryer large basement storage.

You can live in it, not just ‘camp’.
