The Gold Standard for monitoring your 12V system is the Bogart Engineering TriMetric TM-2030.

James,
Lots of good ones out there. I use a Blue Sky IPN-ProRemote.

The Trimetric is probably more information than you want or need for weekend camping, particularity if you are plugged into shore power. It is intended for solar system users and/or boondockers. But it does give good insight into the state of charge, of the batteries.

We had the Blue Sky for years since it came as a part of our solar system.

I can recommend Victron 712 Battery Monitor with Bluetooth.
If you plan to install Solar it talks to the Victron SmartSolar Controler with Bluetooth too.
Its easy to configure via Smartphone App and makes fun also for weekend warriors to watch historical data.
Its fairly easy to install as even I could do it.
Most time you spend figuring out how to run communication cable
Mike

I have been using a Bogart TriMetric since 2006. One of the best items I have ever added. One of things that I like, besides knowing the constant state of my batteries, is that before I go to bed I check the monitor when dry camping so that I know that all needless power draws, like a light left on in the basement, have been turned off.

I have had a Victron 702 since 2010, just upgrade to the BMV-712 last April. Love the Bluetooth interface to you phone, and history with the phone app.

I purchased a cheap LCD ? meter and mounted it right below the control panel. Its accurate enough to know when battery voltage is low and to start the genny to charge them up for a bit. They can be had for around $6-$10
It also doubles as a night lite do its blue glowing display at night.
