Electric Cord Reel

How do I get my electric reel out of the RV or at least get access to it to pull the cover off the motor to see what's not working. I can push the switch and hear it trying to run but nothing actually happens. My RV is a 2021 3781RL Legacy.

Time to remove the "J" panel. The Search facility is your friend. Here are other member's experiences:

On my unit, I have to remove the aluminum rear panel to get complete access to the cord reel. I had it off earlier this year for a different problem. It is not hard to take off. Cut the caulking and remove a few screws.

I have not had any problems with my cord real, but others on this forum have and will probably respond.

On my 2018 Montana, I have had the issue twice whereas the pins in the motor clutch fall out and naturally it just spins. I removed panel as you note. Once in there, the pins should be visible under motor. Simply reinsert in clutch wheel holes.

Electric real

First, let me start with this. You do not have to take the entire side off the rv. On the other side of your rig, take four or five of the screws out holding the panel. Then take the screws out from behind your Rig. You should be able to bend the panel up very carefully. Have someone hold the panel while you undo the 12 V switch wire. Then take the four screws in the back of the box out. Pull the real forward and you’ll be able to drop it to the ground. Leave the 110 electric alone, but make sure your power is shut off. The problem you are having is the chain on the real has come off. Shoreline makes the reel. This has become a real problem. Sure wire offers a retrofit kit that will fix this problem. It may be purchased on Amazon.

PROCEDURE TO REMOVE OLD REEL COUPLER:
Figure A
Shoreline Reel Retrofit Kit
Model CRRK-01
506-00025C Page 2 of 4
Step A1 Remove the Shoreline Reel from the compartment that it is currently installed in by
following the recommended OEM procedure. Place reel on a work bench in the upright
position with motor cover facing you.
Step A2 Remove the (8) 3/8’’ nuts that secure the motor cover to the reel frame. Once all nuts are
removed, pull the motor cover off from the reel. The motor cover gasket does not need to be
removed and can stay in place on the studs. Remove the cable gland from the motor cover
and slide off from the wiring harness. The kit includes a new motor cover that has clearance
for the clutch tensioning parts.
Step A3 Remove the (2) cap screws located at the center of the large sprocket and remove the clutch
disk. Discard the cap screws and clutch disk as they will not be reused. If there was a plastic
spacer between the clutch disk and sprocket, this can be discarded as well.
Step A4 Firmly grasp the chain and large sprocket and pull off the main shaft and set to the side. Keep
the chain and sprocket away from dirt or other contaminants during this procedure.
Step A5 Remove the c-clip from the end of the main shaft and set to the side.
Step A6 Clamp the vice grip pliers around the solenoid body. The pliers should clamp snug around
the solenoid without excessive force as to not damage the solenoid body. Using a 7/8’’
wrench on the solenoid nut, loosen while holding the body with the pliers. Rotate the nut, not
the pliers when removing.
Step A7 Remove the Velcro strap from the reel coupler and push the dowel pin through. Once the pin
is removed, the reel coupler will slide off the main shaft.
Step A8 Loosen the (3) bolts that secure the motor to the side frame. Do not remove the bolts just
loosen so that the motor can move freely.
PROCEDURE TO INSTALL THE RETROFIT KIT:
Figure B
Shoreline Reel Retrofit Kit
Model CRRK-01
506-00025C Page 3 of 4
Step B1 To install the new reel coupler you must first make sure that the actuator lever is properly
positioned in the bracket. The actuator lever has two shaft ends that fit into holes in the
bracket. The actuator
lever will move freely
back and forth when
installed properly. With
the actuator lever
installed, slide the new
reel coupler over the
main shaft while sliding
the actuator lever arms
into the first groove on
the coupler.
Step B2 Align the dowel pin hole
in the main shaft and the
slot of the reel coupler in a horizontal position. Insert the dowel pin into the dowel pin hole.
Step B3 Use the Velcro strip and wrap it around the reel
coupler shaft covering the dowel pin ends.
Secure the end of the Velcro so that the end
falls into the black line that is on the strap. The
end must be within this black line as it provides
the right amount of tension on the dowel pin
ends.
Step B4 If replacing the solenoid, cut the solenoid wires
at least 2 inches above the splice into the motor
wiring harness. Use supplied wire splices to
connect the new solenoid to the harness. Place
the solenoid plunger and spring through the
bracket hole with the solenoid nut placed over
them. Hook the middle slot of the solenoid
plunger onto the slotted groove of the actuator lever arm.
Step B5 Insert the solenoid plunger into the solenoid body. Slide the nut onto the threads of the
solenoid body and finger tighten.
Step B6 Clamp the vice grip pliers around the solenoid body. The pliers should clamp snug around
the solenoid without excessive force as to not damage the solenoid body. Using a wrench on
the solenoid nut tighten while holding the body with the pliers. Rotate the nut, not the pliers
when tightening until snug. The solenoid body should be positioned so the wires coming out
of the solenoid body are closest to the reel frame.

Step B7 Reinstall the c-clip into the
groove of the main shaft.
Make sure that the c-clip is
fully seated into the groove
of the main shaft. Use the
flathead screwdriver to push
the c-clip into place if
necessary.
Step B8 Install the bearing flange
with the flange on the face
of the sprocket stamped
“IN”. The sprocket with the
flange will be installed with
the flange side towards the
reel frame. Hook the chain
over the large sprocket and
the small sprocket attached to the motor. With the large sprocket facing the correct direction
slide the large sprocket onto the main shaft. It may require some force to get the hole of the
large sprocket onto the main shaft. If it is too difficult, try loosening the (3) motor bolts to
give the chain extra slack.
Step B9 With the #2 Phillips screwdriver and
flathead screwdriver tighten all (3)
motor bolts until firmly snug making
sure all are tightened evenly.
Step B10 Refer to Figure B for assembly order of
new parts. Install the clutch disk
included in this kit with the rubber side
facing the large sprocket. Spring will be
installed under the spring retainer.
Verify all holes are lined up between
the retainer cap, clutch disk and main
shaft. Install the shoulder bolts and
torque to 55 in lbs.
Step B11 Slide new motor cover over wiring harness and lock cable gland into the opening. Place the
motor cover onto the reel frame with the gasket against the reel frame. Make sure no wiring
is caught in between the cover and frame. Install the (8) 3/8’’ nuts and tighten evenly until
snug with the gasket just starting to compress. Do not overtighten.
Step B12 Reinstall the reel into the compartment where it was previously installed following the OEM
procedures. Test the reel by following the normal operating procedures to verify that
everything is functioning properly.
