Too much chucking

We switched from a HEAVY Demco sliding hitch to the Pull Rite Superlite 2600. Love how easy it is to hitch up and unhitch BUT the ride is TERRIBLE! There is so much chucking and the ride is so uncomfortable. We are using a Ram 2500 6.7 Cummins diesel to tow our 330rl weighing a little under 14,000 lbs. The truck does have airbags but the ride is still so rocky. What can we do to help with this???

I am not familiar with that hitch so I can’t help but there are probably some here who can. Posting which trailer you have and what your tow vehicle is and if you have done any mods like air bags etc may help
Welcome to the moc.

Welcome aboard! I see in your profile that you tow a 330RL. That’s a great floor plan…one of our favorites! It has a GVWR of about 14300lbs and a loaded hitch weight north of 3000lbs. It would help to know what your tow vehicle is.

When you say “chucking” are you talking about the tug of war bouncing between the TV and the 5er when you go over bumps? I assume so since the Pullrite 2600 is very similar to the Andersen Ultimate Hitch. Both operate on the same principle and have no play at the ball so “slop” movement shouldn’t be an issue.

In my mind managing chucking is about managing pin weight. A 3/4 ton truck will have inadequate suspension for that trailer and will result in more chucking. My 1 ton SRW also had some chucking with my Andersen Hitch (although chucking as I’ve described it isn’t about the hitch). I solved the problem with air bags. Others have used Timbrens.

Please let us know what your TV is. I may be way off the mark depending on your truck and definition of “chucking”

Thanks so much for your response. Yes I am talking about the tug back and forth between truck and rig. We do have air bags on our Ram 2500, should I air them up more?

Well, ideally you would have a 1 ton truck for that trailer. You are likely over that trucks payload. But you could go through a weigh station to be sure. What year is your truck and what is the posted payload on the yellow sticking inside the driver door?

The simple answer for the airbags would be “yes”. For me 35 to 40psi evened out our ride pretty well. I would increase the air until the ride feels better.

I also installed a wireless pump in our TV so I could adjust the air levels on the fly. FWIW, our current DRW doesn’t have air bags but I also don’t have any chucking. Our trailers weigh about the same.

Our truck is a 2018 2500 6.7 turbo diesel so payload is over 3000 and max towing is over 17,000 so we are good there. I’m going to increase my air bags to see if that helps. Thanks so much for your help.

Our MorRyde rubber cushioned pin box works great to almost eliminate the chucking problem.

I didn’t have a lot of chucking. Mainly on concrete highways. But I added a 5th Airborne air ride pin box and it eliminated most all the chucking I did have.

We had a huge amount of chucking. Installed Reese 5th Airborn and all of the chucking is gone.

Take JSB 5717's advice and check your actual payload capacity located on the driver's side pillar....the Tire and Loading Information sticker. Your truck is probably over weight which affects all it's handling capabilities. When I first joined this forum, many did not even know that sticker was there.

Installed a Reese Goosebox on ours. Had same results as others have had with the Reese 5th Airborne, but I don't have the hitch in the bed of my truck any more. Nice just to flip the goose ball over and have a totally flat bed. Either way, chucking is basically a thing of the past

I have a 331 RL and tow it with Ford F250. I added Timbrens springs and that really helped with squat. I don't really tell a diff in ride but others do. I use the pullrite auto slide hitch and I don't have any chucking and I am really happy with the way it tows.

Oma, check the bolts for torque on your hitch. I have a similar hitch (had the same hitch but after Lippert changed their warranty for those I bought a new hitch) with the fifth wheel head. The bolts tend to loosen. They did two things at Pullrite. First, they added hardened shims. The bolts were digging into the soft steel. Second, they put lock nuts on the bolts. Make sure you are installing with a torque wrench.

On the Pullrite there is a BLOCK at the Front in the center... Loosen the Bolt and move the block back a little at a time until there is no freeplay between the kingpin and the hitch.... Hope this helps.. I stand Corrected.. I commented on the wrong hitch.. sorry..

I think this is only on the pullrite slider hitch, not a 2600 superlite.

Sounds like you are talking about porpoising, not chucking. Chucking is horizontal movement and porpoising is vertical, up and down. As far as chucking, about the only thing that might help a little is keeping your tires fully inflated. If you didn’t have it before you switched hitches, it’s your new hitch. Air bags can help but I would look at the Lippert “air ride” pin box which reduced my porpoising to none, and greatly reduced my chucking. There are other pin boxes available that also offer dampening benefits but the Lippert is the one I have experience with. Best money I have spent on my rv so far.

No Chucking Problem

We tow our 2008 3400 RL with a Chevy Silverado 3500 HD srw Duramax using a Pull Rite 16k hitch and have experienced no chucking prpblems except on a couple of bad bridges in the Northeast

Did the Pull Right change the height of the pin? Is the nose high?

We changed over to the Pullrite #2600 last year. We tow our 3255rl which is about 12,600 pounds max weight. Our TV is a 2015 Ram 2500 Megacab with a 6.7 liter Cummins. Within the first 15-20 miles we noticed no noise and no chucking. We love the #2600.
