Towing question

Thanks for allowing me to join this group. I’m getting ready to pull the trigger on a 2011 3465SA. I’ve had several 5r’s in the past as well as Motorhome’s and pickup campers. I have a 2001 F250 7.3L with overload preload blocks and air bags. In looking at GVWR, pin weights etc. it appears the ol 7.3 will pull this camper but Im looking for anyone who may have a similar setup and can verify the F250 can handle the 3465 Montana. I’m currently not a cross country Rv er, but hope to be in a few years.

Looking at the specs for the 3465SA it appears that the 11,800 empty weight and a payload capacity of almost 3700 would put you over 15k, pin weight empty according to Keystone is less then 2k. A 2001 F250 will probably scale legally 2k pin weight but I doubt seriously if pin weight will be that low, I suspect closer to 25-2600 and that your F250 can not scale legally. If your truck has the 4R100 auto trans it will be marginal for that much trailer. If it's the ZF6 manual trans you are in good shape for towing. Not sure what overload blocks are but airbags will be an asset for towing that much pin weight. My 2955RL is a little over 12k loaded and the previous owner pulled it with a 2002 F250 4x4 SRW 7.3 diesel auto trans and claimed it did a good job. I now pull the same trailer with the F350 in my signature.

We had a 2010 Big Sky 365, same floor plan. It was a long, heavy trailer and we towed with a Chevy 3500. It is also the only trailer that we broke springs on (twice). You would be more comfortable in a 1 ton. Just my $.02.

Lawdawg, spec sheets are empty weight. Also your hitch is part of the weight. Once you start throwing in clothes, tools, grill, propane, etc the weight goes up quickly.

Keystone says my dry weight is 9030 but loaded it's actually a little over 12k and pin weight is 1980 but when loaded the pin weight is about 2700. Your empty dry weight 11,800 is almost what my loaded weight is. I'm carrying about 3k of gear, food and clothes.

You pin weight is expected to be 20% of the trailer loaded weight, based on my trailer after weighing, but weigh your trailer on and off the truck to confirm. I towed a fifth wheel about the same length and dry weight while limiting the GVWR to 14,000 lb with a 2002 F250 7.3L Crew Cab Long Bed fpr many years. It lacked torque for hill climbs, exhaust brake (added that aftermarket) and transmission braking, stability and transmission cooling capacity, which caused overheating on hill climbs. Eventually sold it and replaced it with my current truck, which mitigated all of these issues while towing a 41 ft 15,500 lb fifth wheel trailer. Best purchase I ever made.
