tpms on tow vehicle

just wondering... does anyone use (your choice) TPMS on your tow vehicle also... ? My '18 F250 has an integrated tpms system. so i'm wondering if i need sensors there too. seems redundunt...

I do (TST), but only because my tow vehicle does not have sensors. Yes, it would be redundant; unless you just want one system monitoring everything. If I had the option, I would use the OEM system on the tow vehicle.

For whatever reason (have to ask Ford) F-450's do not have a factory installed TPMS.

I purchased TST At the MOC rally last July for my trailer. The tow vehicle has factory sensors. I don’t see a need for redundancy.

I agree with what others have said. I purchased TST for my truck because mine didn’t come with monitor for my tires. Chevy/GMC don’t put it on the one tons, has to do with weight rating that they are not required to put them on.

I have sensors on both the truck and the trailer, including both spares. My '14 F350 has TPMS, but it doesn't tell me anything about what PSI or even which tire it is if there is low pressure. It just says "low pressure" and then flashes the tire icon. Also AFAIK, the built in TPMS's don't give you temperature readings or thresholds.
I included the spares so I don't have to climb under the truck and trailer to periodically check them. Just peace of mind, I guess.

Do the factory installed TPMS allow temperature monitoring and alarms? If not I would get the same sensors on the TV as the RV.

I use a Tire Minder TPMS on my Monty and my TV. Your TV is new enough that I believe the OEM TPMS sensors look at each tire individually. If true, you can probably rely on the OEM setup. My TV assumes that the TV only has one tire, even though each wheel has a sensor. Since the recommended tire pressure for the TV is 65 front/80 rear, the TPMS is set to alarm at some pressure below 65 PSI. That might be OK for the front when towing but on the rear it would probably mean that one or both rear tires were already ruined. Having an aftermarket system for my TV fits with my philosophy that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

Like a couple of people said the factory system doesn’t offer temperature, and I can set the threshold so I bought a set of 12. 4 plus the spare on Monty and 6 plus spare on 2017 F350 DRW. I like the peace of mind.

One other thoght...if you already have the monitor and sensors on the 5'er, 4 or 5 sensors for the TV at around $25 each is cheap peace of mind.

My 2020 Silverado 3500HD has factory OEM tire pressure monitoring. I also have a stand-alone TST system for the Monty, but the systems use a different frequency. I can install GM tire monitors in the trailer tires, and be able to read them on my Chevy’s screen, but will wait until I need new tires.

By the way, I am a little dubious about the tire temperature readings from the TST system, since the valve stem sensors are spinning around in ambient air. The tire pressure readings are a more accurate indicator of temperature increase from when the tires were cold.

I use tpm on all four of the rv tires and on 6 of my truck tires (dually) but I would add that make sure you have steel air valves. I had rubber on the trailer and got two flats from the stems leaking from the added weight of the TPM. Now I have steel all around

I have sensors on all my tires and I have found it useful. In 10 years of 5th wheeling I have never had a problem with the truck tires, but it is still good to know with a minimum of effort which tires need a little more air. I have a TST system that monitors all the tires including the trailer spare. Is it overkill? Maybe.

Update..

the DW and i just returned from our first trip...

the tpms on the f250 worked perfectly.. on monday when we were about ready to leave the tpms system warning system went off. i checked on the instrment panel and found that the FL tire was at 51 lbs. i double checked with my trusty digital checker and found the same reading.

I forgot to mention that the TPMS on the truck only alarms when the pressure is REALLY low, so when I am adding a few pounds to a couple of trailer tires it is convenient to know that the truck tires are fine or maybe there might be a tire that needs a little air. The factory TPMS for my year and model does not give psi, it just alarms when the pressure drops to a warning level.

I had a truck tire fail once. The alarm went off. Fortunately I wasn't towing at the time - just sight seeing. I checked the tire and was about 40lb. 2 miles to town and stopped at gas station - now about 30 lb. Added air but it actually went down more to 25. Attendant said tire store 1 mile down the road. Got there and had about 20 lb. Nail in the edge of tire right by the sidewall - unpatchable. Got a new used tire to get home and then bought a new one from my dealer (or got all 4 - I don't remember).

By the way, just to jab you ford and ram guys! LOL It doesn't sound like you can check pressure from the console??? Mine tells me which tire is low when and alarm sounds and you can check pressure at any time.

Ha, it’s also handy for knowing which side of the truck the sun is shining on
