I`m sorry but I don't think your comment has contributed anything positive to this thread!
I would have to say that he did not express his opinion in the best way possible. But, he makes a point that is some what valid, "AND I REPEAT SOME WHAT VALID". And I express my point from being a Class A CDL holder with over a 1,000,000 miles accident free. Operating my 3500 and 3721 combination is no different than a Peterbuilt with a 53' box. All of the same techniques and principles of operation apply. Have A Blessed Day.

A Class non-commercial drivers test

I spoke with a local police officer that owns a 5th and took the class A non- commercial drivers test. He did not have any one accompany him for the test. However, he said you can bring any license holder with you if you want. This is for the state of PA, so I do not know where Bakersfield is, whether it is in PA or not. I would suggest you call your local or state police department because they have a good idea of the driving laws and tests.

Bakersfield is in CA and it is an immediate *FAIL* to show up without a fully licensed driver.

No seriously why would someone move to CA?? CA is the only state that I have heard of that doesn't at least do wink wink look the other way when testing folks for this. Seriously, it is not like the drivers coming in for the test do not have years of driving experience beforehand.

Perhaps talk with UPS or FEDX to see if one of their drivers off duty would like to earn some spare cash?

Being a current 32 yr commercial driver myself(just a few million under my belt) , I still think it is far better to help a fellow camper than it is to sit back and poke fun at them as they struggle to SAFELY get into a campsite. IF they refuse help and or tips and pointers, thats on them, my conscious is clear,I tried to help them.

Im just a firm believer in "People helping people"!!!

I took a school bus driver with me here in Illinois. They didn't ask how I got there or check to see if she had a class A license.

kasboat, have you solved your Class A problem, i.e., a person to go with you for the test?

Not yet but confident I’ll find someone, just may have to change the date to accommodate a driver. A few of my acquaintances own or run businesses (oilfield & agriculture) that should have Class A license holders.

Thanks - I should be able to get a handle on someone today or tomorrow as I cycle thru my golf groups....I typically leave enough money on the table they should feel indebted to me. Ha

Kasboat, I'd come and help you on the 11th except that we have reservations and plans for 11-18. If you got another appt at DMV around 21st thru 26th or so, I would drive up from Menifee and help you out. We have another trip already planned for 31st with paid reservations already made. Let me know.

Grzly,
Thanks for the offer. I’m confident I’ll find someone locally, apparently even my gardening service have class A. So looks like more options the harder I look.
If u are ever passing thru, staying at the Bakersfield RV Resort send me a note, if I’m in town, I’ll come out & have a cup of coffee with you, they have a great little restaurant there called “the Crest”.
Enjoy your trips & thanks again for the generous offer.

Kasboat,
We live in Bakersfield as well. Just Ordered a 3120 and am now looking at getting my non commercial class a. How did your test go? What did they have you do?

The State of Ohio requires no testing at all you can buy any class of Rv and drive it away having never set foot in one before. I do not approve of that practice but that is the way it is. We did hold a CDL and had some driving skills. I would suggest that everyone who is not familiar with operating a RV take a class somewhere.

Non-Commercial Class A - California

Hello “Towing Home”,
The test isn’t over (long story) but I understand what it entails.

First - a Class A licensed driver that accompanies you - when I checked in, the person at the counter asked where that person was, I said by the vehicle, no one asked again or checked.

The test is two parts: Part 1 of the test is to demonstrate u know the “pre-trip” checklist with your rig as detailed in the Recreational Vehicle hand book. Not too hard but they are looking to hear specific things as written in the book. Also be sure they are giving u the non commercial test, they gave me the commercial test 1st & I had to retake the non commercial. With the retake we ran out of time to complete the skills & road portion. So I will do that in the future.

The skills test consists of 100 ft straight line backing; offside backing into adjacent lane; & alley dock from right angle. The road test as they described to me was same as book.

While I was there talking to them & looking at the skills course at the F street location I stepped off the distances & I believe the alley dock with my set up will be difficult as there will not be a lot of pull-up room. When I was leaving my pre-trip test I asked them if I could make a few passes as the office was closing, 5Pm (again ran out of time - even with appt), they said no. I plan to sneak over there early one Sunday morning & practice the alley dock.

I’m not sure when I will schedule the practical April or May but when I complete it I will let u know. Any further info feel free to pm me.

Thanks so much, seems like you have had quite an experience so far, hope it gets better soon. One item that concerns me is an area to practice in. Not as many empty parking lots without cement bumpers as there used to be in town!

Farmers are excluded from a CDL as long as the vehicle they are driving has farm plates and are within 100 miles I believe it is from the farm. The distance can vary state to state.
