Dealer changes price on delivery

We have not given the dealer a deposit yet. We are trying to order a new RV and the dealer says that even though we will sign a contract for a specific price, the manufacture may raise the price 2-5 percent upon delivery. Is this something new? Is it legal? If I refuse to pay the difference and back out of the purchase the dealer won't return my $$ deposit. It sounds pretty sketchy to me! Any help?

$15,000 deposit?! You can't see them but my eyebrows are RAISED! Over the years I bought 2 Montanas off the lot and ordered 1 more and the dealer never asked for a penny deposit. I would shop with others if it were me.

I agree with WBF and would shop elsewhere, I have bought 4 fifth wheels over the past 20 years, never had to pay a down payment or sign a contract. If they change the price on you, walk away

Steve,

Dealers are starting to build inventory. Find a different dealer that either has inventory to buy off the lot or willing write a firm contract to order.

Is it legal? Sure if you sign the contract.

Run do not not walk to the nearest exit. Purchased many vehicles over the decades, never heard of the price increasing on delivery. Find another dealer, even if you have to travel, there are honest ones still in business.

I can see the dealers problem. He doesn’t know what the factory will charge him when the camper is delivered. The factory doesn’t know the price of all the parts that go into the camper until they take delivery of them. I know this is s extreme but suppose the price for the factory and the dealer went up 50%. Neither could hold the price and stay in business.
We are ordering steel for the shop. The factory says oh the price will be higher but we don’t know how much and we don’t know when it will be delivered maybe 44 weeks. That is the way everything is right now. And that is in almost everything. I would say make a deal with the dealer to cover the extra cost and if the price should come do you get that.

I just had this with a golf cart I purchased. The dealer had 1 in stock and we made a deal. I asked about waiting and order one in a different color. He said he had 10 on order and one was the color we preferred, but he could no guarantee a price because the manufacture would tell him the price when they shipped. It is happening with a lot of things in these new times.

I left with the one he had.

Here is a link to a similar complaint last year. https://www.montanaowners.com/forums...ad.php?t=83950 There is a concern the OP was venting as they never responded to any questions or to the eventual conclusion.

Besides the comments, check the YouTube video prepared by Bish's RV about market challenges.

Sounds like the dealer is asking you to sign a blank check. I've spent millions on raw materials and on the selling side, never sold expecting more than agreed. When pricing a finished good on repetitive items, the factory should be able to hedge their costs and charge accordingly.

When I first heard that the price of a new RV wasn't finalized until delivery, I too thought as many other posts, that this was an outrageous practice. I just listened to a long video from a dealer talking about Newmar's ending its price protection policy.

In essence, the pandemic and supply issues have changed everything. From the date of order to completion, it seems that the manufactures have no control over the increase costs of the materials as they are purchased and installed.

If your interested, check out .
It's long, perhaps boring but it will give an interesting perspective. Although the example of a high end motorhome is more severe than that of a 5th wheel, the point is the same.

Just write in the contract you have the right to void the contract if the price changes on delivery and receive a full refund of the deposit in 10 days. . $15,000, nah I`d agree to $5,000 but no more. Like others have said you can always find one on a lot if your willing to drive a little. I did ( 3 hours ) and it all worked out but if you want special options take the risk of having to wait again.
Rv dealers.........always something with them.

Between the ask on the deposit and the contract I would walk away. If they're needing that much deposit on a rig they could sell if you don't take it, I would be concerned about them being financially stable enough to still be in business when the rig ships.

I'd be gone, too many dealers out there that want the sale. This one sounds pretty flaky. The whole point of a contract is to seal the deal at the time.

I might agree with you on this EXCEPT... if that's the case and it happens to increase in price, they should be willing to return the deposit.
