Humming sound coming from The propane tank area

Montana 3811MS Owner

Has anyone had a problem with a loud humming noise coming from the propane tank area? It could also be coming from the Automatic Changeover Regulator.

When we have the electric heater on we get a shock when touching the step railing. Does anyone know what could cause this and how to fix it?

I had that hum and it was the red regulator on the DS on mine, as far as being shocked….is it a static type shock or more of a 110v current shock.

Our regulator did that and drove my DW nuts. It worked fine and I could not hear it. To make her happy, my mission in life, I replaced it and have the other one as a spare. I will carry it for years and probably never need it.

I've had 5 campers with propane tanks. Of the 5, 2 of them (including my current Montana) will get that whistling sound when the furnace is running. So, most of the time we don't hear it, and when we do, we can hear it only on the outside of the camper. I never gave it a thought. It didn't hurt anything, and I started taking notice of other campers and sometimes I'd hear others doing the same thing.

It's the pressure regulator. If it drives you batty, switch it out with a different one.

If you are running your tanks with both tanks open and using the switch over feature on the regulator, then try turning one tank completely off and see if that makes a difference. If you run with one off all the time, try turning the second one on at the same time and see if "that" makes a difference. It might, and it might now, either way. But it's worth a test and doesn't cost anything except a few moments of time.

If you determine your shock is not static electricity (shuffle your feet across the carpet, touch a metal object) and believe it is
"Hot skin"
Here is a good link for troubleshooting that.

https://www.rvtravel.com/rv-electric...-skin-voltage/

Since you have already troubleshooting to the electric water heater, I would change the water heater element.
You will need Plumbers tape and a water heater element wrench

I had that happen once when I touched the hub of one of the wheels. The source was a burnt up electric heat element in the water heater. Lesson learned, "Never have the element on with the tank empty." The dealer had just gone over that with us about two hours before during the PDI. It's been 16 years ago but if memory serves me correct I was powering the trailer via a non-grounded extension cord.

It’s a 110v current shock.

Yep, mine has a tiny leak in the regulator. I finally got a new one after waiting more than 6 months and will install once the weather warms up.

The shock is likely a bad safety ground connection. Could be the park pedestal, your power cord, an internal connection, the heater, etc. Can be dangerous if it is. Get a tester like below to check your connections.

You need to get a proper EMS that will tell you what is wrong. That is a dangerous situation. I am referring to the electric issue.

My MHC did the same thing on the right side tank regulator; it would wake us up at night when furnace kicked on. Switched it out with a new one and problem gone. As I recall, it wasn't that expensive.

Some Auto Transfer Switches will also hum if they are AC Powered.

Or any other AC device such as transformer, solenoid, motor, power supply, etc. that has wire wound coils.

So this thread was addressing two problems, humming and shock. What did you replace to stop the humming? A regulator or an ATS?
