change

This is interesting, another reason to buy a Ford.

Engine manufacturer Cummins Inc. has agreed to pay a $1.675 billion penalty for allegedly installing "defeat devices" on approximately 1 million pickup trucks to cheat emissions tests. It's the largest civil fine ever levied under the Clean Air Act, the Justice Department said Friday.
Defeat devices are designed to "bypass, defeat, or render inoperative emissions controls such as emission sensors and onboard computers," the department said.

Cummins is accused of installing defeat devices or similar equipment on hundreds of thousands of RAM pickup trucks between 2013 and 2023, the department said.

“The types of devices we allege that Cummins installed in its engines to cheat federal environmental laws have a significant and harmful impact on people’s health and safety," Attorney General Merrick B. Garland said in a statement, adding that the devices would have produced thousands of tons of excess emissions of nitrogen oxides, which are toxic to humans when breathed in.

It goes on but you get the picture.

Over the years, EVERY automobile manufacturer has gotten "pinged" with unbelievalbe fines for something or another. It's just another way or gooberment continues to fund itself.

I believe it`s for breaking the law not for funding but then some people think sideways. So what has Ford been "pinged" with? During the height of the Pandemic Ford stepped up and converted an unused factory into building respirators so people could live without being told to. Dodge did nothing but they aren`t an American company anymore and GM had to be told by the government to get off the stick and do something to help. And Ford didn`t take the auto industry bailout of some years ago the others took money because of poor management and spent, in part, on their bounces for the top people. I`ll stick with Ford for these reasons alone.

This is across the board. Auto makers were forced to make changes to quickly. They weren't ready and able to comply with the strict regs.

Here's a short read.

Add General Motors to the growing list of automakers facing accusations they tried to thwart regulators by installing software designed to cheat emissions tests.
A lawsuit seeking class-action status, filed today in federal district court in Detroit, accuses GM of using so-called defeat devices in two models of heavy-duty diesel trucks, echoing similar claims against Volkswagen and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles.
GM is denying the allegations.
"These claims are baseless, and we will vigorously defend ourselves," the company said in a brief statement. "The Duramax Diesel Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra comply with all U.S. EPA and CARB emissions regulations."
The reference was to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the California Air Resources Board, which has set the toughest vehicle emission standards in the country.

The lawsuit filed by the Hagens Berman law firm of Seattle alleges the trucks emit nitrogen oxide at two to more than five times the legal limit and pollute more than the trucks' gasoline-fueled counterparts. Robert Bosch, the company that made GM's electronic diesel controls, is also named as a defendant.
Bosch, which has its North American headquarters in Farmington Hills, said it takes the allegations seriously.

"Bosch is cooperating with the continuing investigations in various jurisdictions and is defending its interests in the litigation," according to a statement read by spokeswoman Linda Beckmeyer. "As a matter of policy and due to the sensitive legal nature of these matters, Bosch will not comment further concerning matters under investigation and in litigation."
The company has also been mentioned in a federal emissions lawsuit against Fiat Chrysler, but it is not a defendant in that case.

Ram will quit making the Hemi engines in the near future. It will be replaced with a 3 liter turbo engine with up to 500 Horsepower and get better mileage. This comes after paying over 500 million in gas penalty tax. I might consider a Ram 1/2 ton truck next time.

I’m astonished as to how clean modern diesels run and I for one am glad of it. I absolutely do not miss the days of black smoke billowing from their exhaust.

This is a picture I just took of our stock ‘18 F350 6.7 tailpipe with just shy if 112,000 miles and it’s cleaner than most gasoline powered cars.

My 2014 RAM 2500 Cummins at 103000 miles was as clean as yours.
Soot is not NOx.

The DPF catches and cleans the soot by burning it off inside the DFP using extra diesel fuel.

The NOx issue is due to programming in the ECU.

I can’t believe the power these new trucks have, 500 horsepower and 1200 pound feet of torque out of a 6.7 WOW. My first diesel 7.3 Ford had I think 250 HP and 550 torque. I have a Ford 3.5 Powerboost ordered with 430 HP and 570 torque and is rated for 24 MPG.

Thanks but I already knew all of that. My main point is without our EPA (and enforcement of the same) our air quality would more like this:

And you still posted a picture of soot free exhaust.

Here is the info you need. https://www.chrysler.com/universal/w...ce/pdf/67A.pdf

I posted a recent picture of the soot free exhaust on my Ford F350. I have no need for info on a Dodge?

I hope this clears up your confusion on the subject.
