Gas Fridge Parts

I recently upgraded my gas refrigerator with the 12VDC dual compressor kit. For those that have done this, what did you do with the old parts? Seems like a waste, but I guess landfill is the best option.

Make sure the ammonia is gone from the old cooling unit. It's some pretty nasty stuff. The second time we had ours replaced, this due to a leak, the mobile techs did not realize it had not completely leaked out, and the unit was in the living room of the rig when it started to leak more and we had to evacuate from inside until the ammonia gas had fully cleared. We were at the Oasis RV park in Las Vegas and fortunately had plenty of empty spaces on both sides of us.

This one is still intact. What do I do; take it out on the back 40 and cut it up? Target practice? Then cut it into small pieces for the trash can? If anyone wants it, up for grabs, but not worth shipping.

I'll hold onto the electronics in case someone needs them.

Scottz, how do you like the unit so far? Have you dry camped with it. I'm wondering what kind of draw it puts on the batteries in hot climates.

I have not had a chance to use it yet, other than testing at home (not hot). Quartzsite in January will be the first run. I can tell you it draws 11.4A with both compressors running. Of course the real questions, that I can't answer, is how much time each compressor runs during a typical day. And, of course, there are a lot of variables; how hot is it, how much are the doors opened, etc.

I did install DC-DC chargers. The OEM wiring providing 12VDC to the RV was about a #12 wire; most I could get from that was 4A; so, depending on how much solar is helping, I could be driving down the road discharging. With my new DC-DC chargers the truck is providing 45+A to the RV. Add solar to that and no problems.
