Awnings & Storms
Went out early this morning with my coffee and wound up needing to facilitate a rescue. Neighbors were still puttering around inside their camper and didn't know they couldn't even get out their door. Storm had broken their awning tube in half. Got the debris away from their door enough to get them in and out their door, but will need to go back once the rain stops with our Little Giant style ladder and a utility knife to cut loose what's left of the awning. Just hope someone would have done the same for us.
Folks if you know you are going to leave on a day trip or that there is stormy weather predicted overnight, PLEASE bring in all your awnings.

Wow. Good thing you were there to help. My awnings always come in at night. Nice looking campground. Where is it?

If the fabric is good and only the tube is broke don't cut it away. Rather remove it for future use. I would think if all other hardware is good they could just buy the tube.

Awning was total loss. Both lower arm bracketry snapped off and twisted, fabric was dry rotted. Gentlemen contacted his insurance agent who stated to cut everything loose and insurance would stand up for replacement. Does rather drive home the need to be smart with our awnings. Just glad the folks didn't have any further damages.

Our awnings are not used a lot. They are never out overnight or when we are away from the rig.
Sounds like these were ready for replacement before the storm.

Awnings and wind are like oil and water they just don’t mix.

When you first think to yourself, "maybe we should bring the awnings in," that's the time to do it.

Nice to have good neighbors in the campground! We never leave the awnings out at night or when we are away. I also set an alarm on the weather station if the wind exceeds 25mph it lets me know to bring them in. So I am afraid we don't use them very much.

Several years ago on a previous travel trailer the wind caught our awning and it popped up and then popped down. It didn't break the arms or the roller, but it did tear the fabric where it attaches to the side of the trailer. (not the roller).
I was able to wire it back up by drilling a few holes in the track on the trailer and running wire through them and the fabric, enough I could roll the awning back up. We kept it closed the remainder of that trip and had it replaced once we got back home. And the sad thing was, we were RIGHT under the awning when that happened.
Every since then, we made a commitment we'd never have the awning out unless were were actually right at the camper. Even yesterday, my wife and and our doggie went for walk (at the campground), and before we left I asked my wife if we should pull in the awnings since we'd be gone only a short while. She said, "absolutely yes!" We were gone, maybe 30 minutes. I don't regret the extra 15 seconds to retract and another 15 seconds to extend again.
This is also the #1 reason why we don't hang anything on the awning itself, like lights or those shades that extend to the ground and anchor down.
At night, the awnings are always pulled in. They are all electric, and all it takes is a push of the button. Even when we had the manual awning, I still pulled them in at night after that one got damaged.
Yes, if you are not physically RIGHT there, keep those awning retracted.

I only put the awning out when it’s needed and roll it up when finished.

Many years and a couple of 5'ers ago I left my awning out one night not aware of the forecast.
It started raining, but I was in the habit of always lowering one corner to let the water run off. I looked out of our bedroom window and saw a steady stream of water coming off of that corner of awning so I figured was OK.
Sometime later that night, probably 2AM we were awaken to a huge storm, thunder, lightning and heavy rain. Never even gave the awning another thought and the DW and I just laid there listening to the rain. All of a sudden, there was a noise and the 36' trailer almost dumped us out of bed! Wife figured a tree had fallen on the rig, but I said "the #$!@? awning"! I got up and opened the door as far as I could and witnessed the carnage! I'm sure what happened is the heavy rain overcame what could runoff that corner and turned it into a swimming pool. When it let go and the hundred or better gallons of water was set free, that's what shook the trailer.
I went out, took a utility knife and got up on the roof and cut it loose. Left the twisted aluminum for morning. The whole campsite was 2" deep in water. That storm dumped 7" of rain that night, and literally destroyed the state park we were staying in (Pattison SP in Wisconsin). There is a big waterfall at that park and it was insane watching what it turned into overnight. Water at the swimming beach came up about 6 feet (before the falls)
I digress...
Insurance covered my new awning, and to make lemonade out of lemons we cut the old fabric to make "matching" picnic table cover as well as covers for both benches of said table! People would comment on how our table cover matched our awnings and then I had a story to tell!
Now, any hint of rain or wind, or if I we are leaving for any length of time and of course at bedtime, the awning gets rolled up!
