Failing Hydraulic lines

In the past year I have had two hydraulic lines blow apart at the fitting at different locations. Am I just unlucky or is there a problem causing over pressure in the system?

Don't know what to tell you, but our rigs are the same age; I have had zero hydraulic problems.

It's a quality issue, I have replaced 3 to date and have another with a slow leak, to replace.

OK Daryle: not being hydraulically literate, what does this part do?

Versa this part that you suggested earlier to replace a leaky connector?

The only hydraulic hose issue we ever had was years ago, and the hose was in the front compartment. Removed the hose, took it to an auto parts store that also serves the agricultural area and had a new hose made.

OP here. What can cause a line that has lasted for years to fail? Is there a way that the pressure can exceed the norm or is it just one of those things that stresses and eventually gives out?

My. 2014 has had two hydraulic hoses fail.. but not at the JIC37 fittings..both my hose failures were caused by me when installing m6 GC2 batteries .. the hoses chaffed against the larger GC2 battery cases (which I failed to notice when I installed the GC2 batteries)…

** in your case I suspect one or two issues that would cause the failures at the factory swedged fittings
.. poorly installed fittings
.. radius bend at the JIC37 connection ( bend too tight ) putting pressure on the JIC37 fitting


The stock OEM hoses used are not the greatest .. a 2 wire 9/16 OD x 1/4 ID hydraulic hose will last longer then the RV

You can try a field repair fitting in place of the OEM swedged one but you must make a clean straight cut on the hose and be careful when screwing the insert into the OEM hose or it will leak.

The correct PN is listed in my PDF.. there is a reference to another field repair kit JIC fitting in this posting and it is NOT the correct PN you need..

It references one for a 3/8 hose with thread size of 9/16 x 18 and this will not fit..

Fitting info for JIC37 female fitting is 1/4 inch ID hose and 7/16 x 20 thread size

Carl, those two are the same.
One picture shows disassembled.
The outer sleeve slides over the hose.
The threaded inner part threads into the outer sleeve and makes a sealed fitting.
I believe the video was made by ChuckS post # 8.

I should have been more clear. The first pic is what you posted, in Post #4, with a link to Amazon's 6C1T-6RFJX.

The second pic was from a previous posting at https://www.montanaowners.com/forums...ad.php?t=90305. In that Thread, ChuckS shared a link to his PDF (Post #6) of repairing a blown hose. In that PDF he specifies using the 4CIT.. connection. and shows a pic of a 4C1T-4RFJX and its packaging.

I now know the 6CIT.. is for 3/8" ID hose and the 4CIT... is for 1/4" ID hose.

The $64 question is which one for a 1/2" outside diameter hydraulic hose??? Is the hose ID 1/4" or 3/8" ???

Having bought several of the 4CIT... ones I am hoping they work with a 1/2" OD hose.

That fitting is for a field service repair, not permanent. You should still replace the hose and fittings, as an assembly.

Yup and my video states exactly that at the beginning and a few other sections within the video..

Would it hold up long term?? I tested one on a short hose on my passenger FRT LG for an entire year just to see...

It never leaked.. But I would replace with a quality 2 wire hose from end to end with swaged fittings when time and location permitted..

Lippert OEM hyd hose is of course 1/2 OD x 1/4 ID..

The JIC37 fitting I have referenced works perfect provided you take the time to properly cut the bad section out with a nice clean straight cut..

Images form the fitting I installed and tested on my passenger side Frt LG for one year.. it never leaked ..

It’s a field repair emergency fix that I stated as such in my video. The intent was to give some poor OP the chance to save his butt when a line failed at a fitting and he was 100 miles from anyone that could make a line, etc

I carry JIC37 male to male union and two female JIC37 fittings. With these items I can fix any hyd hose on my RV and get myself going again

I am aware these are "temporary" fittings. I previously had a tire issue which removed the hydraulic lines from one jack. Consequently, trying to open the slides, quickly emptied the hydraulic reservoir without moving the slides a lot. Not a good situation.

I am collecting the pieces parts I need to splice/cap/repair a pair of hydraulic lines should this ever happen again (to me of some other poor soul).

You mentioned "JIC37 male to male union". Those sound like good additions to my supply. But searching for them is confusing to someone who doesn't deal with these things much. Do you happen to have a part number or link to one of these puppies?

I carry two of these unions in case I have a hydraulic hose fail somewhere besides at a fitting .


I carry a few of the field repair kits as well as two sets of plug caps ..

If I have a middle or rear leveler blow its guts I can cap the fittings and use the unions to connect the extend/returrn hoses and bypass the failed leveler yet still use the remainder of the leveling system..

Every OEM hydrauilc hose that runs under the coroplast thru the frame has at least five feet of excess hose rolled up so one has lots of repair options

With the caps (male/female) I can cap off a hydraulic slide cylinder extend/retract hose that failed and still operate the other hydraulic slides .

Some of the locations we stay at the nearest place to get a new hydraulic hose, etc is 100 miles away..

Thanks ChuckS! The field repair kit would have saved me when the wheel wiped out the rear jack. For less than $100 I could have avoided the loss of fluid, operable jacks and operable levelers.

I want to be prepared if it ever happens again.

P.S. Care to speculate why the Amazon unit is $5.65 v. $0.87 for the other? Shipping? Obviously I haven't looked yet but I will.

UPDATE: Discount Hose (at $0.85 each) has a minimum order of $20 and then shipping adds another $10 or so. I only need a couple of these, so I guess Amazon will get my business. Unless Napa has them? I bough other fittings there and their wensite was cheaper than Amazon, had free shipping, and a AAA discount.
