Furnace occasionally making clunking and thunking noises

The furnace of my 2011 Montana Mountaineer occasionally makes a clunk or thunk noise.

It runs, puts out heat, but once in a while I hear a clunk or thunk. It clunks or thunks again sometimes after 10 seconds, sometimes after several minutes. Right now, the last clunk or thunk I heard was a few minutes ago.

What is this? Is this normal?

FWIW, this morning I woke up to no heat. There was barely any flame from the propane stove. I have a Fairview automatic changeover regulator that I think must not be working. I swapped the tanks and the stove burners are normal again. Also the furnace clunks and thunks are less frequent, and currently has not made a clunk or thunk since I manually swapped the tanks.

UPDATE: Pretty much after manually swapping the tanks (defective automatic changeover regulator?) the clunks and thunks from the furnace have stopped. It made the clunk and thunk noises several times after I swapped the tanks, but it's been running for about 10 minutes and hasn't clunked or thunked.

Still would like to know if those noises are normal and what they are.

Scott, see my reply in your other post. It is likely your changeover valve. If you do a search on Amazon, the Fairview valve you have gets good reviews. This is our fourth Montana and haven’t had an issue. It’s usually the little red regulator people have issues with. Good luck.

Oh wow. I saw that little red regulator on the hook-up side propane tank. I'll check out your reply in the other thread! Thanks.

Do you by chance have a link to the correct regulator to buy to replace the little red one?

The main issue with the red regulator is noise. Most replace with the Marshall red regulator.

This is copied from a post by Carl. He always has the info.
According to previous history and experience here, the regulator is
part # C6121#2049 30psi From Marshall controls.

FWIW, the Fairview regulator in our rig failed. All of the appliances still worked except the furnace, which has a higher demand for propane flow. I ended up replacing both the main and the little red changeover regulators with Marshall Excelciors. Haven't had any problems since.

Also see my response on your other post. It's a free and quick fix if it works. Also, FWIW,
I eliminated the little red regulator several years ago with no adverse effect on anything. I know what the specs say and the purpose of the red regulator, just sharing my results.

From what I read, it will work fine - until you are in an accident and the rod running across the front breaks off somewhere. Then you have a blow torch shooting out propane. Although, I suppose those valves in the tank should prevent it, so I don't know.

Once in a while I get a clunk when my furnace is running. I have concluded that it is a metal duct popping as it heats up. It normally only happens once during the heat-up cycle and once during the cool-down cycle.
