Ya - I'm back offshore now. Had a welding project on my honey-do list during my days off. Thermometer inside the shop indicated 105° up here while I had the Miller Bobcat running. That was my "easy day" off since that job was accomplished in the shade. Lord this heat was easier to take as a young pup...

I often wonder how our parent’s generation dealt with this kind of heat and no air conditioning.

I’m guessing my Dad felt air conditioning for the first time when he went to Stephen F Austin University after the Navy in WWII. Not sure about my mom - she was a city girl.

We always had window units or central AC in the houses I grew up in. However - I did not experience an air conditioned classroom until I went to college. Hot summers never stopped me from playing baseball or riding bicycles. Summers in Texas were hot…just the way it was. Now - I have to mentally prepare for the heat when I walk to get the mail!

We have been extremely lucky here in western Va. it’s been a great summer. We have had a very few days in the 90s with plenty of rain. Mast days are in the mid to upper eighties. We are mowing our lawn over once a week. There has been bad storms all around us but we haven’t had a bad storm all summer. I keep wondering when will our luck run out.

At home in Colorado, our high this year has been 87. We saw 80 once here in Alaska this summer. The heat has been in the south. But, we are now in Tok, headed to the border today so we are starting our march south toward rally. Stay frosty down there. I’m sure it will be warm in Indiana.

Now you are making me feel old! Growing up, our "air conditioning" was whatever breeze would blow thru the screen doors and windows. We eventually got an evaporative (swamp) cooler. But with our typical humidity that barely made any difference except it did move a lot of air. Real air conditioning was at the downtown movie theater for an afternoon movie. And maybe a stop by the five & dime if I had an extra quarter. It was rumored that the rich folks actually had air conditioners in their houses!

And for heat in the winter we only had gas space heaters. But due to carbon monoxide concerns those were not operated at night. And the old house had no insulation. So nights were gauged by 1, 2, or 3 of grandma's quilts depending on temperature which sometimes dipped into the low teens or single digits. But since we never knew any different, it all seemed normal. But I know now what those people who still do not have AC have to live thru.

Finally moved into an air conditioned house at 23 after being married 2 years.

This is really getting old. 38 days (I think) over 100 so far and this for the next 10 days at least. We have already set a new record for longest period of time not dropping below 80.

With all the ODD weather, forest fires in Canada and Hawaii, the heat in the south and west just to mention a few. I wonder what the weather will be like next year and years to come.
Where we are in western Virginia the weather has been great. We had mornings last week in the 50s. I will be hot this week in the upper 90s. I keep wondering why have we escaped the bad weather and how long will it last. We can’t be this lucky forever.
