Roof Repair

Went to clean my roof today and found the dicor separating from the cap, I plan on cleaning existing dicor which seems to be in good shape and cover the seam with lap sealant. Question: would I be better off scraping off old dicor with a heat Gun or just covering over old sealant.Click image for larger version

Thanks I appreciate your response but doesn’t help me any as I live in Oregon and most likely can do the job myself
At least you got a plug in for your son

Personally, I would be tempted to try to carefully remove as much as possible. It will often come up reasonably well once you get it started. I've used plastic tools to gently get under it. Either way, make sure you clean it well so the next batch bonds.

Whenever I've had to repair those types of cracks, I do not remove the old. I do clean it as well as possible. I scrub it with a brush and some Dawn, rinse, let it dry completely (I give it an over night usually). Then come back next day and follow up with an alcohol cleaning. Then just simply add new on top of the old.

I'm too concerned about damaging the rubber membrane by attempting to remove the old. As long as the old is still sticking good and tight, a new bead along the actual crack, sealing it has always worked well for me. I've done these types of touch-up on all 4 of my campers in the past and never had an issue later.

If the old can be removed, for example, it's flaking or crumbling, then yes, remove as nothing is actually sticking to the rubber. However, if its holding well, leave it. The less you fiddle with some things, the better off you are.

Thank you for your advice, I did manage to remove most of the old caulking as it was a warm day it made it easier to remove and I finished up with mineral spirits sparingly.
I used two tubes of lap sealant.
As I was getting down I noticed the rear portion of the roof also had a failed seam which I’ll tackle tomorrow Haha I’m an expert now
