Stink Bugs

This is for all of you stink bug lovers. Virginia Tech studies stink bugs. They catch them all over southwest Va. This year there are a lot less stink bugs. They have been catching them on a farm I'm on several times a week. I check the traps and have for several years and there is almost no bugs in them this year. According to the grad students the stink bugs might have a fungus infection. When they catch them a lot have a red fungus on their bellys. These die in a short time and the ones without the fungus will live until next year. Last year they caught hundreds this year they are lucky to catch thirty.

Hey, maybe we will not have as many at the Fall Rally this year if that is the case. We always bring a few home with us and find them later in the year or in the spring. Normally they are dead because of the cold here in Nebraska but have actually killed a few earlier this year, thinking they made it through our Nebraska winter. Lynwood tell your students down there we'll be happy to trap some from Goshen if they really want some! I catch them by using a 2 liter bottle with the top cut off and reversed down in the bottle and taped down with some type of pop/soda in the bottom of the bottle. I've also used the same thing and put an electric tea candle in it at night and they come crawling in and can't get back out. Always catch quite a few in Goshen over the week or two we're there.

Seeing as how nothing else will eat or bother them, I'm happy red fungus will do something! We've seen next to none in NVa this year.

Maybe Va Tech can do something before this fungus wipes out all of our beloved stink bugs. You might be able to find enough to take to the rally so every one there can at least take a few home with them.

We're in the northern panhandle of West Virginia and saw my first one for this year today. The trouble with taking them back to Arizona from Goshen is they are all alive. We have no cold to kill them.

I think coming up with some recipes for these would be a great thing...free food source for rv'rs. Grilled stick bug marinated in citrus...stick bug on a stick, stick bug enchiladas. Any tasting volunteers? John

We killed over 300 that we counted the year after we went to the Goshen rally. Thought we would never get rid of them. And yes they were bad in VA also..

I'm afraid you won't be seeing as many this year.
Seriously Va Tech thinks something maybe the fungus killing a bunch of them off. Maybe just maybe they are a downward course.

We have more here in central MD this year than the last several years but nowhere near the stinkbug megedin of 2011-2013.

Just as the Virginia Tech student told me she thought would happen. We have less stink bugs than last year, dozens not hundreds like last year or thousands like in years past.
She said a fungus was killing them. Keep your fingers crossed.

Would have been nice if the pine beetles would have caught a fungus years ago.

Yes that would have been really nice. There is a lake on Union Pass Wy, Lake of the Woods that I have pictures of taken 2 years apart from the same place. The first year 30% of the pines are dead the second year 90% plus are dead.

We spent 2 weeks at Hershey, PA exactly one year ago. Took a bunch of them back to Calif. Just returned from a 2 month trip, and are still finding dried out ones. It doesn't freeze here, but food is sparse in our Montana when it's in storage.

We brought a couple families of those critters back from a trip to Virginia in 2017. One of their kids wanders through the 5er occasionally even as late as 2 weeks ago. Our bitter cold winter days haven't killed all of them and maybe never will. A vacuum cleaner works wonders on their future wanders.
