Are you collecting social security and are a Veteran?

Not sure if this is common knowledge or not, but I just found out yesterday that if you're collecting social security and are a Veteran, you may qualify to get a raise. I qualify and so is my father-in-law, pretty cool. See the link below.

Thx for posting this. For a lot of folks that extra amount is already baked into the calculation for benefits. However, it is important to know this so we'll make sure it is included.

I thought that also, but from what I can tell, you have to specifically request this as well as bring your DD-214. Hope it helps people in this economy.

Thanks for posting this. I retired and started receiving SS benefits a while back. When I saw your post I contacted my local SS office and they did have that calculated into my benefit. It’s certainly worth calling and double checking…

I’m one of the few that can actually live on SS. I couldn’t buy new cars, trucks and campers. We live cheap in a little house so we don’t need much.
Thanks for posting. I’m sure a lot of people need to know this.

I also read that for 2022 everybody collecting Social Security will get a cost of living increase of about $100.00 a month. I know it's not a lot, but every dollar helps.

Thanks, I'll check into that next Tuesday after the holiday calling rush lightens. I'm a 100% disabled combat vet from the 1960s. Purchased my military SS time toward CSRS. Due to CSRS my SS net is $28 monthly. Not a typo, $28 after plan B.

Any way you can check online to see if you are getting this benefit OR do you have to make a trip to the SS office?

Thanks

I'm going to try calling during a time with the fewest calls, after lunch Tues or Wed

I saw this a few years back and forgot all about it. In 6-8 months I get to apply for SSI benefits so hopefully I don't forget about it then. Getting the extra cash sure will offset the monthly Medicare costs that I didn't budget for. Thanks for the reminder.

After the plan B increase I'm expecting my $28 net on SS to drop to $4.73!

This scenario for additional social security for military vets has been going around for 10 years or more. Somewhere in the 2010-time frame, the SS admin posted a change, stating military time is automatically included in your calculations at time of starting your benefits. This has been referenced by others who have worked there and other military forums about every two years that it is brought up. Just saying don't get your hopes up to high, as we all can use a boost in the monthly premiums if it were readily available.

Don't count on any COLA from SS being a true increase. Sure, they are giving us more, but if you do the numbers, the amount they withhold for medical is greater than the COLA increase. Bottom line is a net loss.

I was in the reserve for 6 years so I’m not a vet. How much more do vets get?

My response was for standard SS, nothing to do with vets.

The increase is 5.9%. Take out the part B premium increase and you are lucky to stay even. Big deal, they give it to you on the front end and take it away on the back end, plus a possible tax increase.
