I77, Fancy Gap
Today Fancy Gap made the 6 o’clock news again. It does on a regular basis. Fancy Gap is on the Virginia North Carolina border. It’s a gap between Va and Nc where the wind picks up speed and blows things like tractor trailers and campers over and some times off the road on a regular basis. If you travel I77 and there is a wind advisory believe it. Your camper is no match for Fancy Gap. Several tractor trailers were blown over on it today. Several years ago a state trooper was blown over the mountain when he stopped to investigate a tractor trailer that had been blown over.
Just a word to the wise.

I travel that several times a year on the way to WV. You're right! The wind advisory and fog advisory should definitely be believed!

True we run it twice a year on our way to Florida and back . We keep out EGT below 1200 and take our time. We have seen some bad accidents over the years primarily due to big trucks running way to fast.

We also tow through there multiple times every year. I have seen 2 travel trailers on their sides at the top of mountain heading north in the same area. I always thought it was a strange place to lose control going up the mountain. I bet it was from strong winds and over steering to correct it. Both times an SUV was the tow vehicle.
There are a couple of much steeper/harder climbs on north into WV. Thankfully just not as long.

Fancy Gap is the name of the small community there. We don’t hear about a wreck unless it a big one, several cars or tractor trailers involved.
My brother and I were going up the mountain at 65 MPH several years ago and had a seven foot 2X10 blow out the bed of my truck. Fancy Gap is the only road I have ever seen on that worries me. I guess because we hear about it so often.
Be careful.

Thanks for the heads up! We travel through there on our way to Florida and back every year (not this year, stuck in Canada). I have driven through fog in there, but we have never encountered winds. We always check the weather forecasts for every place we travel through, and if wind is a factor, we hold off leaving until it's resolved.
