SOB.....Why?

What's up with calling another manufacturer's brand a SOB instead of just saying Jayco, Cardinal, Cochman, ect? We mention Ford, Chevy, Dodge. We talk about Norcold or Dometic. We argue Goodyear or Sailun, but we won't mention another brands name! Is it against the rules? Are we to lazy to spell out the name? Is it not politically correct? I just don't get it. Seriously, can someone explain this bizarre behavior to me.

I don’t have the answer. But there is a difference between this and the others you mention as this is a Montana specific forum. But I don’t know that it is forbidden to mention another name. Just something that got started somehow. Wouldn’t be the first time I was wrong though.

The use of SOB is simply an acronym for "some other brand"
I believe there is something in the forum rules regarding the usage of other brands names.

I'm guessing not mentioning brand names all got started with the original website developers which are no longer in ownership of this website. They were great people, but were darned strict about what came and went here. When you join, it specifically states this is a Montana Owners website and you're supposed to own one to become a member. Although I can't see a reason to discuss something about another brand on the MOC ... I don't see harm in just typing something like, "My neighbors Jayco has a similar roof leak issue" as long as it ended there. I know what you are saying though ... other brand specific websites have the words "Excel or even Montana" that pop up in conversation from time to time.

Does this mean we will have to spell out LOL?

SOB is shorter than typing the other brand's name.

Before I posted, I scanned all the FAQ's and saw no mention of the subject. Just seems silly to me to be tip toeing around mentioning the virtues or deficiencies of other brands. We're not children here, heck I suspect that most of our children's children's have children! Not me, I'm not THAT old

I think you can mention other Brands in reference to issues and problems that are part of a general discussion, but what you can't do, as in our case give the SOB name that we currently own or compare it to Montana's in general. I got in trouble a few years ago for a comment I made, while not directed at Montana it could have been taken that way. So I try to just post on general topics that are the same for all brands.

Why SOB because the previous owners of this form wonted it that way and out of respect for them us old timers still refer to other brands as SOB.

When someone is talking about "some other brand," I would like to hear the name of the product. In my opinion, we can all learn from these posts and leaving out information serves no purpose. We currently have a Montana and we used to have a Jayco and before that we had an R-Vision.....there you learned something about me.

I suspect some folks use SOB as a bit of fun considering that it also has another meaning if you catch my drift. Sorta like talking trash against the other team on game day. I see absolutely no harm in it.

On the other hand if the forum was originally so strict it would not let you mention another brand name then thank goodness it isn't that way now! Seriously that would be ridiculous!! Nothing like having folks tell you how to act!!! Sorta like those people that go around on neighborhood watch just looking for an excuse to be a busy body! Oh my look the Jone's have let their shrubs grow 2" to close to the window sill. Lets write them up!

Most brand specific forums, like this one, refer to other brands as SOBs rather than by name. Don't know why.

Some time ago I owned a Heartland product and was on their forums. Before that a Forest River product or 2 and still visit their owners forums. My signature in both indicate a Montana is now owned and a Cougar before that. I get questions about my rig and it is never a problem. The thought in most forums is we are all here to help and learn and nearly everything that can happen to a unit from 1 builder can certainly happen in another as they all get the same parts from the same supplier.

OK, I'll ask the question from the Moderators and hopefully won't get banned.

Moderators: Per opinions of this thread, can I change my signature to show my current Brand name?

Ditto! I'm masterdrago on all the other RV forums I try to learn and contribute to - Escapees, DRV, Grand Design, and a bunch of others. Also several of their FB pages. While I do not throw into their face I'm a Montana owner, I sure don't avoid mentioning brand names. When we spent 10 months hunting for our 5r, we shopped DRV, GD, Heartland as well as Keystone. We even entertained a Newmar. Cost of insurance killed that idea. There is no shame in saying SOB or the real name, it might be best to keep your SOB preference to yourself on the MOC

Our MOC numbers are close so we are also old timers and and we feel the same as you. This is the Montana forum and only Montana's were to be reference to. We can go to RV net or Escapees and talk about any brand.

I started using SOB when we owned a Glendale Titanium and was active on that forum. No, they didn't 'forbid' using any other brand name, it was just an easier abbreviation then spelling out most brand names - and why I continue to use that SOB term. As far as this forum not allowing any other name - before my time here. I have also used SOB as an abbreviation for a rude term too but in other contexts
