Are fuel prices changing your travel plans?

I am in sunny SoCal where diesel is approaching $7/gallon. For me to just get out of the state the fastest I travel east on the 10 to Blythe. That will cost me $172 just to get to the border. I know fuel is less outside California but by the summer where will it be?

We were planning on going to Colorado in August (have reservations) and then just winging it from there going north and then west and finally coming home. That little jaunt will probably cost up to $3000 just in fuel round trip.

I'm not cancelling yet but it does give me pause considering all that is going on.

Wondering if anyone else is making changes or cancelling plans?

Has anyone noticed any decreased in occupied spaces in campgrounds?

Edit: This is not to be a political thread, go somewhere else. I just want to take the temperature of fellow RVers about camping this season. Like, if people are cancelling reservations I might have a better chance of finding a camping site while on the road. Or, finding popular attractions less crowded. We all have our opinions on why the prices are going up. It's the result I'm interested in finding out about. Thanks.

No wish it would settle down. We are still going to go to two regional rallies and the national rally if it doesn’t get a lot crazier

staying local. Less than 100 miles one way. Unless cost keep going up. Then it will be 100 miles round trip max. The cost of CG fees are at an all time high due to covid and the explosion of go rving commercials years ago. The amount of units in my neighborhood is up 70% of what it was back before the advertizing campaign and without the covid crap. At one time I could call on a Tuesday or even Wednesday for reservations that weekend. It has been a very long time since that was possible. Now I'm most likely to get a safari field or "if you had a tent trailer" statement.

I’m not changing my travel plans. If my wife can travel I’d like to go to Wyoming this year. She has back trouble so if she feels like she can we will. Which camper do we take, the Montana or the motor home. I’d much rather take the Montana. The motor home is well a motor home. There isn’t much good to say about a motor home except it’s convenient.

Changed our plan that had us leaving for Florida this week. Yes, fuel cost is a concern. However, not being able to find enough diesel is a larger concern. Lived through this in 1979 when many stations were out of "gas" and could only purchase ten gallons if they had it. This was before retirement and RVing. We traveled out west in 2008 when fuel was actually higher based on inflation. Taking a "wait and see" at this point. Luckily, was able to move reservations forward a few weeks.

I went RVing in 2008 when diesel hit $5+ in CA. I will go RVing in 2022 regardless of the price. You never know how much longer you can sustain this life style so enjoy it while you can. Will I adjust to offset the increased cost? Yes - but dry camping is fine with me.

This reminds me of my neighbor. He lived about 3/4 of a mile through the woods from us. He was a true American original. He had two saying I remember. Boy, we ain’t guaranteed another minute. And boy, any of these new cars will last you a lifetime if you drive them fast enough. Both are as true today as they were fifty years ago.
If you can go camping go. As for me. I’d rather spend my money than leave it for someone to throw a party after I die. Go enjoy yours because someone is going to throw a party after you check out.

We are NOT canceling our plans this summer.

Some families may have to stay a little closer to home. That is always fun too.

Sort of hope that the higher fuel cost will have others cancelling reservations so we can get in as we're not changing any plans. Worked hard too long and to much money tied up in the RV and TV to just let them sit.

I calculated the fuel costs for a trip to Yellowstone. The difference between what fuel was last year to today's price was $450. I will pay to go regardless but it put the whole thing in perspective. If the added fuel costs reduces congestion at overcrowded destinations then that's worth it right there.

I have to agree with Michelle and Ann. Since Covid, we have had a lot of issues trying to get camp sites, overcrowding, etc. Hopefully, this cloud of high fuel prices has a silver lining.

The price of crude is down today by about 5 or 6%.

We won't be changing plans because this is the first year we have both our Monty's on permanent lots, so we won't be hauling down the road anymore. Traded the truck for a new car and a big check back in November when it's value was 5 grand more than we paid for it. So we towed 65,000 miles and got paid a fair amount to do it.

We wont be traveling much this summer, giving up our seasonal site but diesel cost ($4.99-$5.29 yesterday) is not the only reason. We will be moving and majorly downsizing our home. We also may be putting the 5er on the for sale list since our new place wont have a storage area. Oh well!!!!

Was gonna go to Elkhart Rally. Not with fuel prices they way they are. Staying within 600 miles of my house. So that gives me Idaho Montana & Wyoming. I’ll be doing a lot of fly fishing & rafting this spring & summer.

We may not need to worry. The price of a barrel of oil dropped back to under a $100 today. The oil market rises like a rocket and falls like a feather so don’t expect any relief tomorrow.
