Why do newer TVs have higher payload than older ones?
I was looking and the payload on our 2008 Ram dually is 4450. I think the max trailer is 19K.
I know that the newer trucks have greater payload and towing capacity, but I don’t know why they do. What is so different between our current truck and a newer Ram diesel that gives it so much more capacity? Did they just beef up suspension on them?
Thanks.

Suspension and frame upgrades along with the drive train is what gives payload and towing capacities.

Payload, HP, torque, tow capability, mileage and other factors make up the competitive comparison between GM, Ford and Chrysler. All three work hard every year to be more competitive by increasing their capability.

Your 2008 has the Dodge transmission. In 2013, Ram started using the Aisin medium duty truck transmission. They also completely redesigned the frame in 2013 and increased fuel rail pressure boosting torque. Those changes greatly increased the Ram’s capability. That was my first Ram. They continued to upgrade torque. The 2021 has 1075 ft lbs. I believe my 2013 had 850 ft lbs of torque. They have also upped the camera and safety features. My favorite upgrade is the adaptive cruise control.

I have another question. Why in a lot of the test the are the DRW trucks tested at 30 MPH and the SWT tested at 35 MPH? Google J2708 tow specs and see if this isn’t right.

I think it is because as they drive duelly drivers are still looking in disbelief at the bill they received after the last time that they replaced all 6 tires.

No, is has to do with the ease with which it pulls and handles that monster hooked behind. Just like being out for Sunday afternoon drive.

Payload was increased on the newer Fords due partly to a body change from steel to aluminum. It gave them the ability to to bolster their frame. I think Ram may have lightened their bodies also.

Best payload = most sales…
Goes for all specs. It’s amazing how close they keep the numbers between brands.

I'll stick with the dually

Don’t forget tires also. Lots of increased capability and reliability. My 2020 Ram SWR long bed has 4156lbs payload and max tow is about 20,500 lbs. Theoretically if I put 295/70/r18 tires I could have over 5000 lbs payload.
But really the limitation still is around 16000 lbs w a fifth wheel. I tow about 14,500 lbs loaded to go. It’s a great truck. Once I put my tool box on the truck loaded and my 46 gallon aux tank, hitch and fill the cab w wifey and our other junk, I have around 3800 lbs on the rear axle.
Crazy but it’s true. I won’t ever get a bigger trailer. I can’t stand to wash a dually and my SRW still goes through goo goo.
Haha
Good luck!

The cost of replacing just two more tires on our F350 doesn't even come close to our list of concerns.

The SAE test protocols take a lot of factors into account when tow rating the trucks. One of those factors is coolant temperature rise during the test run. This is why in 2020 GM put that giant 21" fan on their trucks, along with a bigger trans cooler, thus allowing them to increase the towing capacity.

Any guess on the tow rating for a 2023 Duramax?
Rumored to have a new HP 505 & TQ 1085.

I would be surprised if a 2008 had 4450 payload. Can you post a picture of the yellow sticker on the drivers side door pillar. That is the ONLY accurate number.

My 2015 2500 6.4 Hemi Ram has a payload capacity of 3130. My sis in law has a 2006 2500 cummins Diesel & i was supprised to see according to the yellow sticker on her door her payload capacity is only 1863 lbs.

Mostly because of the weight of hemi vs cummins. Lighter motor increases payload, heavier motor decreases payload.
