Hatch Door

Has anyone changed their hatch door so instead of lifting up it would hinge left or right. Looking to do this on our Montana 3781.

I have wondered about this too. I think my old 2005 Montana had this, then by 2013 they had the lift up ones. Which work fine except under the bedroom slide. It can't lift that high and I hit my head too often!

I've seen this on SOB's like Grand Design. I have often wondered why Montana didn't follow suit. At least on the ODS front under the bedroom slide. It would make accessing that area so much easier.

Worked on a couple of SOB's with the side hinge. They may be handy for tall people, but for those of us that are "vertically challenged" ... I don't see an issue. Ha! Both doors were sagging on the hinges enough to have to lift them to get the doors latched. One unit was about 2 years old ... the other I don't recall.

Unless you don't care about looks or are creative it will be cosmetically hard to accomplish. If you look at our doors, the hinge is sorta integral to the door frame and door itself.

Good to know. If I had seen them available, I would probably have jumped on it. Then been disappointed when they sagged and didn't seal.

I remember the 2000 years models had the side opening doors under the slideout. They were two doors instead of the one piece used today (maybe to avoid the sagging problem). They didn't come with struts or latches and consequently would blow around in the wind. I know I added a door latch on one side but on the other side I had a bungee I used as there was no place to install a latch (the propane locker door was in the way?).

Our previous Montana High country had double doors that opened side to side and I had issues with them leaking water.

On my 3781 I relocated the strut on both basement doors. They had installed they to open way shot of the available room and I gained several inches of clearance. Easy mod and very helpful.
