Trailer braking system needs serving

This message appeared today while not towing anything. Any advice before taking to dealer? Thanks

Google Search is your friend ... I just typed in "GM pickup message trailer braking system needs servicing" and dozens of you tube links popped up. Fix for some was replace the dash switch ... others was replace the module under the bed near the rear of the truck. Lotsa good videos and some not so pertinent.

Googled it first thing and then posted on a couple of sites. Yea, a lot of reading and hoping it was moisture since had snow and ice on it for a couple of days. Need to attempt to fix since will be pulling in a couple of months! Thanks

Yep, same thing happened to us this last Fall when we were heading to Michigan. I got beat up pretty bad on these forums for towing without brakes on the trailer. But, you've got to do what you've got to do, at the time you have to do it. No apologies for doing that.

However, WHEN we finally got the truck into a repair shop, it turned out to be the trailer brake relay switch.

About $250 for parts, service, and all fees, and a hour of work and we were were on our way again. We did take the truck to a Chevy dealership repair shop (Marquette, Michigan). Haven't had problems since.

And yes, it displayed with the trailer connected and without the trailer connected. It's your trailer brake relay switch. I almost guarantee it.

( I saw your same post on RV.net, but I'm not responding over there).

Want to replace 30 amp fuse under the hood first as advised by many on google search. That seemed easy to do. O'Reilley and autozone do not carry, said only from dealers. Anyone heard this before??????

I'd check the fuse first to see if it's good. No need to buy a new fuse if the one you have is perfectly good. Aside from corroded legs, automotive fuses are either good or bad. There's no in between
