Winter Camping in Florida...

Going through propane like crazy. Wind chills due to be close to the teens here the next few mornings. We are trying to protect our plants, but some are dying.

It has been cold here for a week and it looks like it will be sticking around for another week. We are watching to see if the temps may drop far enough to disconnect our water and go internal.

The long term forecast does not look promising. Ave temps here south of Disney this time of the year is 72/50. High of 46 a couple days ago. We have been having temps mostly in the 50s and windy. Very cold biting north wind.

Still better than N. MI. However, I noticed that right now our Bellaire home is only 10° colder (27° vs 37&deg than here, 1400 miles south...

Looks like everyone on this side of the country is going through a similar situation. Who'd a thought... winter camping in Central Florida...

Maybe all you guys down in Florida and Gulf Shores should hook up and go out and visit Robbie at Quartzite! That woud be one heck of a caravan heading west through MS, LA, and TX, I can just see the people standing on the side of the road watching all of the Montanas roll by!! Sounds like it is a little cool there but not like it is down in Florida and surrounding areas! I'm toasty warm in the stick with 1* outside and looking forward to heading South in three days! Ain't going to stop in Texas but head to LA and catch a 13hr55min, flight southwest where IT IS WARM! Later Mate!!

Geez, y'all should come to Alaska. We have NO SNOW and temps in the 40's. It's plumb balmy. Flip flop weather!

I see Carol already had a similar post going... I did go internal last night and I am now on our pump for a couple more hours. I will switch back tonight. I was watching the weather get updated (twice) last night with lower temps each time, so I went out and unhooked the hose and pulled in my filters.

I know many of you do have one, but we have the indoor/outdoor weather station by the door with a remote sensor under the front overhang. I check it each night to see where it is and where it might go. Have had to go internal a couple times and supposed to get colder as the week progresses. Glad I store my filters inside the basement and just run a hose out the bottom. Easy to disconnect and store during freezing weather. I don't mind the intermittent cold as long as we don't have to deal with the snow. We do keep our trailer around 65 during the day and just wear sweats and/or a sweater. Not gonna complain too much as many folks don't have near as much as we do. We are just thankful we can still do this type of living..... Stay warm and keep checking the propane tanks.

BTW: Has anyone checked into renting a large capacity (100 gals or so) propane tank for the winter???? If so, what's the deal????

I think that 100# propane tank was briefly on another topic a while back, Phil. I think that someone mentioned that propane companies may want a contract or extra fees or something? Not sure why. I would think that changing out 100# cylinders may include a delivery fee?
Not sure if one can drive to the propane comp. and switch out themselves?

Would certainly be a cheaper way to go, though.

We did the 100 pounder MANY moons ago when we winter camped in Gaylord (yes, we did it for 2 or 3 winters, blizards and great x country skiing!)

I suggest calling local propane provider, see if they do it. I would guess it would be up to each provider, and you might get different answers in different locals.

The 100 pounders can be bought at Lowes, Home Depol etc. We still use the 40 pounders, two on board and have a extra for the times we run out. And of course its between 2:00 am to 6:00 am. The Park we are in sells Propane at cost, 40 pounder cost $19.81 to be filled and you drop it at office and they deliver it back to the site. GBY...

I stayed at a park in Kansas and the propane company would rent us the 100 gal pigs to place at site. They charged $50 a year for rental plus propane and they also came to the park and filled twice a month. Excellent service, you just need to be in one location for awhile for this to work though

Two years ago, I rented a 100 gal tank from a local dealer in St. George, Ut. for the winter. I had to pay an annual fee with the promise to have a refund of the months not used. I had it 6 months, and they refunded the remainder. They sold me the propane at a price, delivered, at a price less than I would have paid by going to the local retail outlet. This saved not only money, overall, but also the cost of time to take the standard tanks and have them refilled. Even with the annual fee, the cost came out less overall. Just a thought. As is mentioned above, the arrangements will be different depending upon the supplier. Here in Las Vegas, the cost per gal delivered is over $3.60, where I can go to the local UHAUL and buy @ $2.75. Why would I have the delivery guy fill my 7 gal standard tanks?

We will go internal tonite as 26 degrees is expected. We hope the C.G does not run out of propane as they are filling 20/30 tanks a day.
