Something else to do before the furnace comes on

Pulled the covers off the floor vents today and vacuumed them out. You can't believe the amount of crap that builds up in those, particularly the one at the end of the island counter. Of course we have cats so they manage to get food, fur and litter down there somehow, but there was plenty of people stuff and just dirt off our shoes down there as well. I do it before I start using the furnace and a couple of times during the winter to try and keep stuff out of the ductwork and the furnace.

Good idea! I just noticed that mine are looking a little "trashy" as well, and I vacuumed them about 6 months ago. I take my shoes off when in the 5er so there must be someone coming into my rig at night and throwing stuff down there.

We found magnetic vent covers at Lowes that are sized for a home vent. I cut them down to size for the Monty vents and they stick just fine. Another thing that you can do is let your grandkids draw pictures on them then cover the pictures with a clear searler. Looks better than the plain white backs. When we take them off they become attached to the stove cover or oven front. The kids enjoy painting or drawing and the artwork is always nice to have along.

That's the other end of the process. You want to do that too, but those are clean after being replaced last spring.

We use dryer sheets due to dog and cat hair, and of course other things. Vaccum, change dryer sheets and all is good.

We get the vent filters and will change them out once we need to put the furnace on and will change them out once a month or so...we have a cat and a bird and although the DW is constantly cleaning up after them "stuff" would still get down the vents.

I used a leaf blower to clean out the vents,
the vac only gets a small area, the blower
blows out the stuff but can make a mess too.

I went to Sutherlands (other stores also have them) and bought 3 mobile home floor vents that have the small arm that closes the louvers like in your stick house. The mobile home vents are the same size as the ones in our fivers. Anyways ... helps in the summer to reduce stuff that drops in the floor vents as well as reduces cold air that seeps out the floor ducting. I've also successfully used the magnetic covers on the vents that don't get walked over.

If you use the leaf blower, it may be helpful to remove the all the vent covers an tape a filter over the other openings so that the airborn stuff gets caught in the filter instead of all over the unit. Otherwise, you would have another major job, dusting of all furniture, lol.

Automation is nice, but I am an old-fashioned guy, I put a can of Tuna at one end, then stuff my fattest cat in the other end. Them cats clean themselves after the task.

And mine come in three sizes to fit every size duct. Thanks for the idea!

Last season I snaked a long loop of nylon cord the whole length of the kitchen/living room so that I can pull a bundle of rags or the neighbors cat through the pipe. You are right about the amount of dirt and hair you can get out of there. The cat really helps to get into the corners of the duct work...

I take the cover off my Ac units and use that cut to fit filter media there also.

we now use the WEB vent filters made for register filtration..we use these in the new adjustable registers, and they work fantastic. 4x12, can be cut down...a 12 pack is cheap. also have the return air filtration as well.

Where might I start looking to find my return?

My heater is behind the wall in the basement and I have wooden "grills" in the riser of my stairs to the bedroom. I think they just allow airflow (heat) to the basement and tanks.

Any air pulled thru those gills however would be mixed with air coming in from other sources (outside thru the basement floor, thru the basement wall etc) so a filter on the grills would be limited.

Would seem to me with my rig that unless there is a direct plumbed return line I might need a filter directly on the heater.

Anyone know where they might be on a 3455sa?
