Michelin XPS Ribs are great tires. Used them for 13 years. But they are load range E at 3,042 lbs. That may be a little light for your trailer. Don’t know if Michelin has a suitable higher load range tire for a 5er or not.

Good heavens Tom and Gail. We know this was NOT the outing that you were hoping to have for the year. Hopefully the two of you can regroup now. Have to say that I admire your intestinal fortitude!

Tom, what can you share about the tires that failed? Mfg date, brand, size, load rating, pressure they were inflated to, CAT scale axle load figures, approx miles they were in service, etc.. Might be helpful to someone on this forum. As others have stated several times, your attitude and patience were beyond how most of us might have reacted.

I goofed!!! Wife and I both thought I got new tires last year. But according to the dealer and my bank records, I bought them April 2017!! YIKES. And to make matters worse, they were manufactured in January 2016. Even the deal said that I always stayed on top of things, but somehow messed this up and it cost me.

As to the load rating, I am pretty close to the 3042 lb limit. I weighed at a Loves and one axle was 5700 (or 5900) and one 5500. I believe one wheel weighed in at 29xx something. Also, I think the other side weighed under 2800 or so. And since I lost one wheel on each side, I don't think it was because of too heavy. The actual tread on each tire was completely gone. And on the last one there was a thick piece - I assume the 'plys'- was mostly gone but part still there. I think it just came apart. Dealer said you are actually better with bald tires as they age, because you don't have the heavey tread pulling it apart. Also said trailer tires almost never wear out - they usually age out.

My bad......

Tom,
You are truly a remarkable person not only because of being patient, long suffering, and forgiving of receiving less than stellar mechanical workmanship, but also for being humble and without guile in taking personal responsibility for things that could have been prevented. May angels follow you, your wife and family for the rest of your lives.
