Hitch?
Bought a new truck and im going to install a new hitch. With the turning diameter of the new 5th wheels would you buy a slider hitch or conventional? If so what kind?

If you have a long box, you don't need a slider. but with a short bed, it will depend on where the hitch is located. most people just for the peace of mind will go with a slider on a short box. A lot use a pull rite style so it does it automatically.

I am going to assume you have a short bed since you asked the question. You can get by without a slider, IF you are careful. Good friend had a short bed and a SOB 5er without contoured front corners and knocked out his back window on a tight back in turn. Bought a Montana with the contoured corners and no more problem with the same truck and hitch. But he was also much more careful on back in turns.

I believe there was a new member post a few weeks ago where he blew out the window w/o a slider hitch. Turning one way would clear, the other wouldn't. Now I may be incorrect since I read so many forums but I'd own a slider if I had a short box.

My guess would be that really uneven ground might cause a problem, but we haven't ever used our slider hitch and I've backed in a U tightly around a single wide mobile home. We're still careful and Joyce watches for me, but if I ever have to use the slider it may be rusted in place.

I have the short bed and I have a slider. I have only needed it once and in that case I had not used it! I heard an awful high pitch noise and noticed the cap rubbing against the cab. I stopped in time and reversed out of the contact. Then took a much wider turn afterwards. I learned a great lesson to use it any time things look tight.

I have a Pullrite slider - works well (relatively expensive and heavy).

Always have had a long bed. If I had a short bed I would consider a slider essential

I was the one who blew the window out. The answer is easy to me: SB slider and be very careful in sharp forward turns (where you can't use the slider as in normal driving), or LB truck. Or plan on spending about $650 on new back glass.

Is the 2016 2500 your new truck or have you replaced it with a 3500?

I did a U turn in a T intersection and no problem. i have a 6.5 foot bed and no slider. It was just fine. I do have the rounded front cap on my 5er. I have the Companion hitch.

I have a short bed and a slider. I need it to get the unit in my driveway. I just make it a habit when I get to the campground to slide it before I start maneuvering through the campground and into our space. Just makes backing much easier. Only twice did I feel the need to use it on some tight turns. Glad I had it. Jim

I also could do a u-turn with the short bed, and my Monty also has a rounded cap - that's why I may have felt overconfident. But the first time camping I was pulling into a gas station and had to round the pumps in a tight turn and POW. Thought I had run over a gas pump or had a tire blow. From then on (after Safelight made a trip) I became very gunshy. Traded for a LB with a fixed hitch and I've got plenty of room I guess that's when I realized the reality of "this can happen to me too." So I would just say to be very cautious all the time with a SB, even with a slider.

I had a Pullrite Superglide installed on my 3/4 ton short bed RAM and never had a single problem with it. Never had to be concerned about turns since it functioned automatically. No levers to remember to get out and pull.
That hitch is expensive but worth every penny IMHO.
I now have a LB 3500 RAM that doesn't require a slider hitch.

CORattler has a great hitch. (I have one sitting in my garage). The Pullrite Superglide hitch automatically moves back when turning. Slick system, especially if you have a SB truck

If the extra payload weight and cost aren't issues for you, I'd go with the Pullrite auto slider. I sure like mine.

I think my Curt does great, but with a SB it sounds like the Pullrite is a better choice if it moves automatically. Would have saved me the $$$ and the embarrassment. As a newbie to 5th wheeling I had to investigate and learn everything from the ground up. Didn't even know what questions to ask, much less the terminology. Figured out "slider" and "SB" go together but didn't know the various options when I bought the hitch. Also thought, "it won't happen to me." Thinking the same thing on my tailgate...so far so good, but constantly aware.

I have a short box and have the pull rite slider. I like it and I can make extremely tight turns when necessary. Instead of backing my trailer down my driverway to pole building I can pull in and make a tight turn and move it into backing position. When backing accidents happen.

I've had the Pullrite Superglide with their removable rails for 5 years and love it! Works perfectly all the time, don't have to remember to operate the slide in a tight turn...all automatic.
As mentioned elsewhere, a bit pricey and heavy, but VERY well made and worth the extra $$ IMO.
