2014 Montana HC 305RL Tires

Hello. Looking to Replace the Tires on my HC. Axle rating is 5200Lb. ST235-80-16 Load Range E. Wheels are rated for 80PSI. Recommendations for a good Tire. Looking at the Sailun's but Appears to be too much for my wheels. Goodyear Endurance looks good but the Rating is 3417#. Gross Trailer weight on my Trailer is 12.500 and pin is 2175#.

The Endurance will be perfect. If the given numbers are accurate, 12,500 minus the pin weight is 10,325 lbs, and divided by four wheels gives you 2581.25 lbs per wheel, well under the 3417 lb tire weight rating.

Thank you. I am going from Memory on weight today. Pretty sure the Gross Trailer weight is close. I will check the Label tomorrow again.

Trailer tires are not selected for GVWR, they are required to have the ability to carry the combined weight of the trailer manufacturers certified GAWRs.

The tire index code is not the official load capacity indicator for RV trailer tires (ST); the load range letters are official. The maximum load capacity for tires is written on their sidewalls.

Industry standards require replacement tires to have the ability to carry the load that can be carried by the OE tires.

Care must be taken when replacing ST235/80R16 LRE tires. That series of ST tires has three official load capacities, 3420#, 3500# and 3520# all at 80 PSI. The goodyear Endurance and Maxxis tires have the 3420# load capacity and are not qualified as replacements for the 3520# load capacity tires.

Am I missing your point? According to specs for your trailer it came with ST235/80R16 LRE tires. Your wheels are rated for 3520#. The correct replacement tires in your size designation need to have a 3520# load capacity to satisfy tire industry standards for them.

Like the GY Endurance tires, the GY Marathons in size ST235/80R16 LRE also had a 3420# max load capacity at 80 PSI.

My point was, Maxxis and GY Endurance don't qualify for replacements on your trailer unless its OE tires have a 3420# load capacity.

Ignore the rim capacity (as long as you don't exceed it). What does the placard on the driver's side near the propane tanks say about the original tires? You want that capacity or more. Montana has supplied rims with greater capacity than the tires for a long time.

It appears there is some serious misinformation and/or FUD here.

You have axles rated for 5200 lbs (or 2600 lbs per wheel)

You have rims rated for 3200 lbs.

With a 5200 lb. axle (which is pretty weak by the way), I would want a 20% tire capacity margin (I believe RVIA only requires 15%) 5200 + (5200 x 0.20) = 6260 lbs. or 3130 lbs. per wheel.
Any of the suggested tires exceed that capacity. Some actually exceed the wheel capacity.

The GY Endurance tires are more than adequate for your RV. Why insist on a 3520 lb. rated tire?

That's why I said the Goodyear Endurance tires would work. Don't know why, with 5200lb axles he would need anything more.

The Stamps on the wheel show 3200 and 3520#. From what I have read the axles are de rated 6k. I am the second owner and the Tires on it now are load rated 123M.

If the wheel has six holes, it will be rated 3200 lbs, if eight holes, it would be rated 3520 lbs .

Because it's a tire industry safety standard and to recommend less would be in violation of the industry safety standard.

The trailer manufacturer sets the minimum standards with their selection of OE tires. We as consumers don't have the authority to overrule the trailer manufacturers minimum standards. (CFR 49 Part 567 refers).

In looking at my Tires today I found that there are Two that are older and 123 M 3500# and Two 124 M 3520# Rated. Not Finding really any tire that will meet the 3520# Rating that looks real good. Compared to the Reliability of Sailun or Goodyear.

You do not need tires that are rated what the wheels are rated, but just need to have at least what the tag on your rig specs out. Again, the Goodyear Endurance are more than adequate. You can install the Sailuns and just inflate them to the maximum pressure the tag on the rig says, or as high as the pressure on the wheel says, both being the COLD inflation pressure.

I can name a dozen or more brands that build the ST235/80R16 LRE tires. However, I don't do brand recommendations.

There is not a USA brand built in your size that will qualify as replacements. China has a monopoly on almost all RV trailer tires. You can find popular USA name brands that are made in their China plants. Probably the most popular name brand trailer tire is built in China, however when they farmed it out to Vietnam a major recall happened.

I don't think you need a trailer tire - I use Michelin LT tires and have for 17 years. No problems at all until this summer when I forgot to buy new and they were 7.5 years old - blew 2 out! They are pricey tho, but I think about the same as some Goodyears.
