Norcold 2118 Fridge to a Residential

We boondock a lot and have adequate solar to power our needs, even with the addition of a residential fridge. Has anyone done this and what brand fridge did you choose? What model?

What brand and model is OEM? Are people with the supplied residential fridge satisfied with its performance and reliability?

Our Residential Fridge is still going strong after 7 years of contineous use and 50K plus miles.

I want to know the brand and model frig that Montana installs so that I can be assured of fit and efficiency from a power point of view.

Brand depends on the year. My 2016 has a Samsung. Some newer rigs have GE. Not sure what else is out there. You may have to specify a year and re-ask your question.

Montana is a 2017 Legacy 3720. The fridge is a Norcold 2118. Any of the Montana installed residential brands should fit the space of the 2118 so I don't think that year or model should make any difference. I still would like to know what AC fridge models have been used by Montana as they will be the correct dimensions to fit the hole.

GE in our trailer. New, 2021, so I can’t speak to reliability other than it holds temperatures in a very tight range regardless of ambient temperatures in the trailer. It runs the same temps if the heat is on and it’s 65* in the trailer (like right now) or 85* while pulling and on the inverter. We monitor it with an Acu-rite monitor. No issues yet.

Samsung RF18. It has been running continuously 99% of the time since we bought the unit new in January 2018. I am always plugged in to shore power at house and it runs on the inverter during travel. Ice maker kicks up and runs when we hook up to water. Nice fridge.

My 2017/2018 has a Samsung. Working great, uses 1,500 Watt Hours per day, so if using Lead Acid count on at least 4 Trojan T105's unless you will have sun every day. Or 2 battleborn LiFePO4.

Residential fridge

We replaced the Norcold 2118 with a Whirlpool model WRQA59CNKZ which fit perfectly in the existing slot for our Montana 2016 3710FL. I had a 1000 watt inverter installed to keep it powered during our drive time since we are not much into the boondocking. This refrigerator has an ice maker in it as well which was a big plus. Bought the unit from Lowes.

Another option

FWIW, J-C Refrigeration (an Amish company) sells a conversion kit that replaces the absorption components on the back of of the 2118 fridge, with 2 twelve volt compressors. One compressor for the freezer and the second for the the fresh food section. An inverter is not needed. J-C also sells a 120 volt kit as well. Last time I checked the kit was $1300. Looks like a doable 1 day install. The web page has an install video for previewing before buying.

I'm seriously considering the JC Refrigeration option, I've seen some videos that shows it only takes about 3-4 hours.

We installed a Haier, Counter depth 16.4 cu. ft. in our 2010 365RE. Best move we ever made. I set it up on its own 1000 watt magnum inverter that stays on 24/7 that also powers a cpap and sat receiver.

I looked at that fridge for my Montana 3665RE. Not sure how I’d like the bins for the freezer. Would cut down on boxy type things like pizza etc. are they durable

Samsung Refrigerator Model RF18HFENBSR Manufactured June 2018

Been running 24x7 for 4 years now, on shore power and with the inverter. (even when the truck broke down in Tennessee and we had to stay in a motel for 3 days and the there was no way to plug the trailer in. Even then, the inverter was able to keep food frozen by running it a couple hours at a time, a couple times a day during that period.

We've traveled thousands of miles from Florida to Upper Michigan and the refrigerator has not missed a beat. Some don't like the Samsung, but we've had absolute success with ours.

The bins are very durable. And, yes that is one disadvantage to the freezer.

How did you get it through the RV door? Did you have to remove the fridge doors?
