Self Certification

I just completed my Monty's self certification in Texas on form VTR-269. No outside inspection at a dealer. Checked the lights, brakes, and overall RV. This is for travel trailers weighing over 7500 lbs. Ready to get my license renewed.

I did mine in January. I had looked at the state website months before and did not see a way to upload form VTR269 so I printed it out, filled it in and went down to the county tax office and got the tag in person. I would love to know if they have since provided a link to upload the form and pay online.

The form says to renew by mail with instructions. SO, I am guessing there is no online version. I had contacted a local RV repair shop who said to drop by with my truck insurance certificate and they would do the RV inspection. Did they know about the online form? Needless to say, I will get my license renewal done locally--usually at HEB!

I saw this online today concerning the processing of this form.

A new form, Application for Self-Certification of Travel Trailer More Than 7,500 lbs. (Form VTR-269), has been created for owners renewing at the county tax office in person or by mail. Owners renewing online will be presented with an electronic checkbox to self-certify.

Has anyone noticed if this checkbox is available online?

This is a wonderful change because getting a RV inspected in Texas was a nightmare. Most shops wouldn't do the inspection, so you ended up pulling the trailer to several places trying to find one that would do it. It pretty much took 2-3 hrs on average to hook up, find a place, go through the inspection, and then unhook (basically a half day off work). My favorite excuse at the inspection stations is that the computer is down, then a place down the street has a computer that magically works. I really don't blame them. They make almost nothing on these inspections. Basically, the system was broke.

I was lucky enough to find a place that would get me in and out pretty quickly. But the inspection was really a joke. Check lights and tires. Didn’t bother to check the brakes. Maybe 3 minutes. Took longer to enter info into computer than the inspection.

Don’t know why they bother with self certify. Those who already routinely check their own trailers will continue to do so. Those who don’t will just check the box.

I renewed at th first of this month and could not renew online. Going to the tax assessor office was still easier than taking my Montana to an inspection station!

I agree and that’s what I’ll do if I can’t find that checkbox in August when I renew again. I took my wife with me once to show her how ridiculous it had gotten. One place in particular would send people away if they didn’t have the title with them (you don’t need a title when the ViN is clearly identified on a newer trailer). People who own small oil change/inspection stations typically don’t want to mess with big RVs or have them taking up space at their shop. I’m glad to hear others may not have experienced my frustrations though.
