Travel Questions about I 10 in Texas and Big Bend NP

Planning on traveling down I 10 from El Paso and then down to Big Bend NP this May. Is this route safe considering the border is so close? How about any suggestions for Big Bend NP?

Recommend taking Tx 375 around El Paso to avoid downtown I-10. We use it every year we head west from San Antonio on I-10. Big Bend is a favorite for us but not when it is HOT. Best times are Oct-Mar. In May expect temps in the 100's except in the Basin. An alternative in West Texas is Alpine, Ft. Davis, Ft. Davis State Park, McDonald Observatory--nice higher elevation. You can still do Big Bend but lots of driving from Alpine area. Enjoy your travels.
