Exclamation Highway 421 in NC thru the mountains

I took 421 from the Fayetteville area to Tennessee. I read that it was mostly 4 lane and it was - UNTIL I reached the NW corner of North Carolina.

Then at Boone it started over the Appalacians Oh Oh!
It was 15 to 35 mph with the longest straight away of maybe 100-150 feet! Constant S curves and hairpin curves. Finally made it thru - or so I thought. Got to the valley and a town called Shady Valley. After about 1 more mile I see a sign that says 'Curves and switchbacks next 10 miles'!!! So I start again and notice I have 1/8 tank of fuel - oops. At the top, the Low Fuel light comes on. I get about 11 mpg on the level, not sure about the up and down in the mountains but certainly less than 11. And I have another 5-6 miles to go. Well I made it - at the bottom within a mile apart were 2 gas stations!

So the moral of this story is don't take 421 into Tennessee!!

The good news is the side of the road didn't have 1000 foot drop offs like out west!

Same trail

I have been there and you think it will never end. I remember thinking I was so glad I just looked at the brakes and hubs. Glad you made it through, always carry some extra fuel.

Our mountain roads can be worse than western roads. They can be steep with lots of horse shoe curves but they are all I have ever known. If you are used to the straight roads in the Midwest they can be daunting. Think about it, 70 thousand pounds tractor trailers make it through every day and you can to. Just take your time it’s really nothing to it. You will haft to admit they are a lot more interesting than a hundred mile long straight road.
People here on MOC every year say don’t take the Blueridge Parkway but I’ll be taking it in our camper down it in the next few weeks. I love it. It is still the prettiest road I have ever been on.

I guess our opinions differ. For me, scenic roads include mountain tops with some snow. I don't think staring at a forest for miles to be all that interesting. I plugged along on 421 but guess I should have expected it as every place in the east seems to have no straight roads!!! LOL Stayed in Fayetteville for 2 weeks and had to take something like 7 roads to drive 15 miles to my daughters place.
