Widowmaker

Well, as long as I have been RVing I still learn something new each time out. This time, I learned that you need to look at what’s above you before putting jacks down on a site, and if there are dead branches overhanging, or even close, you may want to get another site. Came back to the camper on Monday to this. Branch came down like a spear right through the roof, all the way into the bedroom. It’s all good - nobody was hurt, I was able to patch the hole in the roof for now, and I am working with my insurance company and dealer to get it fixed. Another lesson learned the hard way. 😂

YIKES !!! well since its new roof time look into Rhino. My roof is currently getting the Rhino sprayed on. Cheaper then the thin rubber roof. plus the life time warranty and no maintenance !!!

Thanks, Tony! I have been looking into it since your reply and it is definitely intriguing. Almost sounds too good to be true (cheaper, no maintenance, lifetime warranty)! A lot will depend on what my insurance will cover.

Ouch, that hurts..... I know the feeling. Many moons ago, the awning got swept up by a gust of wind on our pop-up. The awning pole flipped over the top and punched a hole straight through the roof. Insurance paid all but my deductible, which was like $100 out of my own pocket. The RV dealership didn't even mess around fixing it. They just replaced with a whole new top at the tune of $4000.00. I thought that was absolutely hilarious considering we purchased the pop-up (new) for only $6000.00 a couple years earlier.

Thank God you didn't get speared while asleep. I wonder if the RV site has some responsibility in that?

At least mother nature caused yours. Returning home from our maiden trip 16 years ago I drove my 5'er right through a low protruding limb. Either way we both had a limb in the bedroom. Yours through the roof, mine through the wall.

We have had all the ash trees die here. They can grow to probably a hundred feet tall and well over two feet thick. They like places hear a road near an open places, camp grounds. Most have been dead just long enough to start falling or have limbs fall off. We had one fall yesterday of course over my road. If you are camping where they grow look up. Don’t camp under one or where one could fall on you. They are a widow maker.

Since our far RV wanders seem to be over due to physical problems, I need to show the OP to my wife who is campaigning for a seasonal site under trees plus an hour or so closer to home then our current site.

We are well aware of "widow makers since our home's back yard is mostly a grove of 100 foot, 150+/- year old oaks. In the past couple months I've pull a couple 6-8 inch diameter, many pounders back in the woods, waiting the chainsaw - even after having most of those limbs removed professionally at a pretty hefty bite to the wallet area. These would have destroyed an RV, not just the roof.

Were you are a paying campground? I would insist they pay any deductible as they have liability for safety while on their grounds when you pay. If its a boondock or other camping location you pretty much are on your own policy.

Most CGs have a clause in their "contract" (registration) with them that says they are not responsible for damages. I can assure you that my `48x57 inch broken window last October would have been paid for by them, not my insurance AND ME.

We frequented a campsite where the trees wreaked so much havoc to trailers they butchered them down quite a bit. Another time in Utah a cottonwood snapped early in the morning crushing cars and a family of tenters near us. It took an army of men to lift the tree off a child who later we learned on the news that he survived. Trees are definitely something to be aware of.

If a tree falls on your camper or house or car sorry it’s an act of God and no one is responsible. It’s the law.
