Auxiliary Fuel Tank Question

I bought a newer Ford diesel dually this past spring and find its fuel tank a tad on the small side compared to my old 7.3. What have some of you done as far as added fuel capacity? If you went with the in-bed tanks ... did you tap into the filler neck going to the OEM tank or do you pump it in? My issue to start is I have an extended cab (not a crew cab) long bed which nearly eliminates any under the bed replacement tanks available save one manufacturer. If you gravity feed from your in-bed tank, have you ever run into any LEO issues during travels?
Thanks in advance for your info.

I was looking into installing one of those incorporated with a toolbox to take advantage of cheap diesel when we find it.

Rds tank toolbox
RDS MFG INC 72746 Fuel Tank https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001HVHO82...53KKGC552AW5MS

I have read there can be issues with some states auxiliary fuel tank regulations. I have not researched that part yet.
For this next road trip, I'll be taking two of these

No-Spill 5-Gallon https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000W9JN4S...FK6FE9C0TTC8AV

I added a Built Better Transfer fuel tank with a combo tool box, I have 75 gals of fuel with the OEM tank I have a total of 111 gals of fuel. I prefer the transfer tank, simply because I never like to cut into a fuel system on a diesel truck. Actually, it was the best price for the product. Good Luck with your choice.

Happy trails

I bought an aux tank from Camping world and they installed it and tapped into the filler neck with a shutoff valve at the base of the tank/bed. The Chevy (8ft bed) has 37 gallons while towing goes close to empty around 325. Usually, 350 is the trip distance. The aux tank is 30 gallons and is about 10" wide and height to the top of the bed, losing about 12" of bed space. I fill both tanks full at the beginning of a trip (about $200 now) and close off the aux tank from the main tank. When I get to about 250 miles on the trip, I open the aux manually and let fuel trickle into the main tank. When I stop for the evening and setup, I cutoff the aux tank leaving the main tank full and refill the aux only. At CW the tank was about $600 and additional $300 for install and tubing parts. I keep the tank empty when not towing, due to diesel crud and weight factors. The filler is hole is on driver's side next to the main tank, so it's easy to move between tanks. Hope that helps.

I bought a Transfer Flow 70 gallon tank from Classic Trailer, Springfield, MO. It replaced the 35 gallon OEM tank in my Chevy diesel dually. All the gauges and fuel fill port worked off the new tank and I didn't loose any bed space. The only change was my fuel capacity doubled.

Thanks. I thought Chevy might have snuck one in on me.

In my Ford dually, I installed a RDS 72774 Transfer Tank & Toolbox Combo

http://www.rdsaluminum.com/auto-transfer.html

I has a 48 gal fuel tank and a 18" X 50" tool box.
I really like the larger (deeper) tool box and the fuel capacity for the truck is doubled.

I used the fuel neck for delivery and it works great.

I have an RDS Fuel/Tool Box combo. The only issue I have is you need some type of Code Reader/Clearer, because my 2018 Duramax after 100 miles if the ECM hasn't detected any fuel usage from the main tank it will throw a code and if not cleared will set a Check Engine Code after a restart.
I have a cheapy Scan Guage and it works to clear the code and keep on motoring.

I have a 46 gallon tank from ATI. It fits perfectly. It is gravity-feed for simplicity. Cutting into the filler neck wasn't too difficult. Follow the instructions and YouTube videos. Before you decide on size, visit the CAT scales w/ rig and determine your rear axle weight. You DO NOT want to exceed the max. Good luck

I ordered an RDS 90 gallon tool box tank combo last month from Leonard’s and it ships direct from RDS near Tallahassee. My ship date is 3/11/22. I also ordered the gravity flow adapter kit.

I purchased a 60 gallon tank from KSH in Lake Havasu, Its gravity feed with a solenoid and tied into my upfitter switches. It works well with my roll top bed cover from truck covers USA which has a smaller roll top canister then other roll tops.

ATTA auxiliary tank mounted in the bed right behind the cab. Comes with a gauge that can be mounted on the dash, and backlit. Sets up so that when the OEM tank gets below a certain amount the tank has a pump that pumps fuel in to the OEM tank so that your OEM fuel gauge is accurate. Minimal space in the bed. Love mine.

I have a Transfer Flo 50 gallon low profile tank (fits under my roll up bed cover). Automatically pumps fuel from the auxiliary tank into the main tank. It works in a way that your main fuel guage is accurate for the total of the fuel between the main tank and auxiliary tank. I have a mobile app that connects with Bluetooth to show me how many gallons remain in each tank at any given time. You can also get a display to mount in the cab that will show you the same thing. Taps into your ODBC port for main tank fuel information. Fuel line from the auxiliary tank connects to the main tank vent hose - not the filler hose. I have been very happy with it.

Titan Trekker 50 gallon

I purchased a Titan Trekker 50 gallon auxiliary tank. Installed it myself. I had put a Titan replacement tank in a previous truck and was impressed with their quality. This tank is just as impressive!!

I guess I am the only person that had a Titan 55 gallon tank installed. It goes in the same spot as the factory tank. No loss of bed space, no extra pump, no indication that it is even there.
When I go visit the kids in CA I fuel in Nevada, and can get back to Nevada without paying an extra dollar per gallon.
Be careful with tanks that transfer. I was told that without the proper evap/recovery setup, California can cite you. A little hard to believe considering that Transfer Flow is based in Cali.

Gordo,

I put a 52 gallon Titan replacement in an ‘07 classic Silverado CCSB. That tank doubled my capacity from the 26 gallon factory tank and I liked it a lot.

This time around I was looking for more capacity in my ‘20 Silverado CCSB SRW 3500 which has factory capacity of 36 gallons. The replacement tank is a lot of $$ for the 50% increase in volume. Having gone with the auxiliary tank I now have 86+ capacity because the tank holds just at 52 gallons with an air space. I have a Backflip hard folding tonneau that covers it when folded forward for 5th wheel and the front section flips up vertically to access the fill cap.

Did not go with a gravity feed system as I was told they are prohibited by the DOT, and deemed unsafe.

AMike, you're not the only one. We put a Titan OEM replacement tank in. 60 gallons now. I want to keep the bed clear.

I Replaced the 37 gal OEM tank with a 61 gallon transfer Flow tank and also added their 50 gal aux tank in the bed with the Trax system. Total of 111 gals. The systems works great. It's DOT compliant. It automatically transfers fuel from the aux tank to the main tank as the fuel level drops in the main tank. I am very satisfied with it. I had the system installed 5 years ago and haven't had any issue with it what so ever.

We did the Titan tank and installed it myself. The instructions were wrong and the factory folks were a joy (not) to work with. The product seems to be good quality. Funny, we avoided the CA fuel prices last weekend as well. $6.29 for diesel was the highest we saw.
