Salton Sea
Left Yuma and made the trek to the Salton Sea area, about 120 mile run. Stopped at 3 campgrounds on east side of lake on Highway 111. Best way to describe it is "almost a wasteland". Stopped at Bombay Beach for a lunch break and saw a sign that said "Ruins of Bombay Beach" which described it well. Stayed overnight at Mecca Beach Campground which only had 4 other campers there with about 60 camping spots although only a dozen were open for use with 6 of those having full hook up. Best way to describe it was a lake that was virtually a cesspool of chemicals, no fish and high levels of algae. The Salton Sea now happens to be one of the most polluted lakes in the state, with polluted air, copious amounts of dust making it hard to breathe, and algal blooms, which contaminate the water. Left after 1 night and returned to BLM land NW of Yuma. Very few RV's in the area camping.

A friend told me what a beautiful place the Salton see was. He was out there 50 years ago. The hotels and beaches beautiful. I don’t think he would think so much of it now.

Could be a new boom coming to that area. They've found lithium deposits there. Many companies are into the process of getting required permits to start mining. Hopefully it won't get into a regulation nightmare and gets killed. Getting it up and running would be an economic boom that the area desperately needs.

And don’t forget about the Great Salt Lake. It’s has shrunk by 2/3 and could practically disappear in 5 years if steps are taken to help.
