2015 Ram 3500 Brakes Locking Up

Having an issue where it seems my brakes are locking up while towing and it always seems to be when I hit stop and go traffic and then once I get going they overheat. I thought this last time I was going to catch fire because it was smoking pretty bad. Im thinking my caliper may be sticking but it seems to unstick once it cools. Not sure where to turn from here. Really scared to travel at this point. Any advise would be greatly appreciated

Sounds like a sticking caliper me me too. Had the same issue a couple of times on an older Ford P/U. Once it cools back down the piston and seals contract and will work ok for a short while. It will get worse and worse until it fails completely. Replace it and bleed the system, not difficult at all. You may have warped your disc if it got so hot it was smoking, so that may need replacing as well.

Had that issue on my wife's expedition. It turned out that the brake hose was collapsing. Replaced hose for around $25.00 and all was fine. Her expedition is a 2010 but only has 36K miles on it.

I too had a collapsing hose problem on a 2000 Chevy pickup. It would pull to one side when braking then start pulling back in the other direction. Fixed that side then a few months later the opposite side did it. They were both on the front.

Same thing on my 09 Ram only never got hot enough to smoke but you could smell it. Mine was exactly as Theunz noted. Not a big deal and it does happen. I rebuilt the caliber and replaced the rotor which had warped. Do it now because it is going to happen again.

If in doubt take it to a brake shop. Yes, likely a sticking caliper. I had it on my older Ford and just recently on my RAM. Get them rebuilt...you'll feel better.

Ram Brakes sticking

Sounds like calipers are sticking and or brake lines are collapsing.

Could be one or both.

Once the brakes are overheated the sticking will get worse with use.

Guessing it is the front brakes on the truck?
Replace brake pads calipers and brake hose on both front brakes.

Do not get tempted to replace only the calipers as often it is the hoses that are bad causing the calipers to fail.

700,000+ miles and several Dodge Rams experience.

$100 says it’s the brake hose. Lost count of how many I have had to change on Chrysler products.

For your SAFETY, get your truck to a shop today! One or more of your brake hoses have blisters on the inside. Cannot be seen on inspection. These blisters typically come with age of the hoses and I have seen it happen to newer vehicles as well. Over time the rubber will develope tiny fishers, or cracks which under very high pressure will form the blisters. The blisters will fill with brake fluid under high pressure when the brakes are applied. They will restrict or even stop the return of brake fluid to the master cylinder under low pressure when your foot is off the brake. As these blisters grow they will cause your brakes to slightly drag and eventually cause lockup. Don't delay getting this fixed for your safety and for $$$$. You will experience a much lower MPG at $5.00 a gallon.
Caught early, it will be just new hoses. Waiting a while, will be, a complete brake job including wheel bearings. And finally, if you wait too long, it will be huge $$$$$, fire and total loss of your tow vehicle and possibly your Montana!
Get it to a shop today for your safety!
